ID These Connectors/ Wires
Can you help me ID these connectors/ wires? Obviously the wires with the fusable links are power wires, where do they get mounted? also the one with the frayed end does not have a fusable link is that a ground?

Re: ID These Connectors/ Wires
1st pic, hard to see but the green wire w/ the tank connector looks like the one for the coolant temp sender for the gauge, it's in the head between the exh. ports on the front.
2nd & 3rd pic,all the wires with the amp rating crimps (fusibles go on the starter. The funky plug is for the coolant temp switch, the other one is the same but only the center is remaining, the rest broke off. It's the knock sensor connector.
The one with the frayed end, is that heavy purple? if so, that's coming from the PN switch

in the 1st pic on the right it looks like the wire connected to a connection that goes right under your intake or into the back of the intake.

so the 2 loop connectors go to the starter, what about the frayed wire with out the fusable link? which coolant temp switch and which one is the knock sensor?

hmm where on the back of the intake? that woudl make sense tho because then the other connector would go to the oil pressure sensor for teh guage back there as well.

Re: ID These Connectors/ Wires
the broken one looks like it's the knock sensor, the other is the fan switch.
The big pink one is not a fusible link, it goes to the starter like the others.

Thanks for the help

91 firebird that was a 5.0 TBI car, got a L98 from an 87 that is being swapped in, but the harness and ecm are from a 91 Speed Density car. So its a frankenstein to some extent...

I meant the heavy purple. That 1 pin weatherpack connector looks like it's purple too, if so, that's your O2 sensor conn.

Re: ID These Connectors/ Wires
ok, sorry for the news but i cant find my camera :0 but yea that green wire looks like it is for injectors, on mine its v6 3.1 engine but that wire looks exactly like the wire that gives power to the injectors. either that or oxogyn sensor.. not too expiereinced but thats my view in it.

<add>the broken funky connector with just the center goes to the fan switch and the other funky one goes 2 the knock sensor by the starter(Id bet). The fan switch is close to the exhaust manifold soo it gets brittle and breaks like that.>
The one with the frayed end, is that heavy purple? if so, that's coming from the PN switch
<Add> if its purple, goes to the little post on the starter solenoid>

Re: ID These Connectors/ Wires
ttop, we are in complete agreement. I added the O2 sensor in a later post..I agree that it looks like that one. There are only a couple 1 pin connectors on the car and the wire looks a smudged dirty dark purple.
You're right about the knock sensor and fan switch. the fan switch one does tend to break, it'salso on the back of the head so it's a shorter lead than the knock sensor.
I don't have a pic of the stock starter but this will give a good idea of how to hook it all up. The black connector on the right just above the oil pan is the knock sensor

So to recite, all the wires with the fusible links + the frayed one go to the starter like above.
The green with the tan connector is the coolant temp sender for the gauge. It's between exhaust port 1&3
The 1 wire weartherpack connector with the purple wire in the same little harness is the O2 sensor
the broken conenctor is the fan switch between exhaust ports 6&8 and the other one is for the knock sensor dead center above the oil pan.

Chilton sux. Helm INC makes the factory service manuals. pricey but if your going to keep your car, buy one and learn to use it.

Re: ID These Connectors/ Wires
May I join in with a connector question? I have these two that go on the passenger fender, near the fan harness connector. I was thinking that they hooked to the battery cable, but I'm not sure.

I also have this one near the brake booster.

Re: ID These Connectors/ Wires
in the first pic i cant seem to find where that 1 prog connector goes with the green wire... the one on the left. it would look like it goes to the old style oil pressure guage that looks like this

which is on the motor because originally it was built to use a 87 maf setup but i know that the 91 SD doesent use that.
which brings me to my next question. should i just leave that attached and just leave it unplugged?
