Re: what is this sensor under plenum?

I think the actual name of it is IAT, or Intake Air Temperature.

Re: what is this sensor under plenum?

What does it do? I thought the cts was the source for the data, how does the ECM use this info. Just curious

LOL, I think your question is the answer to this:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...p-89-iroc.html

If it is a single black wire, it is the EGR Temp Sensor.

Re: what is this sensor under plenum?

The first guys were right. On the bottom of the plenum at the rear is a Water Temperature sensor masquerading as a Intake Air Temperature sensor.

As I stated, it depends on the number of wires going to the sensor in question.

Oh now I see you editted your original reply where you stated I was incorrect. Why do your posts not show as editted?

Here is your original reply as sent to my email "The first guys were right. PDX's post isn't a correct answer for you. On the bottom at the rear is a Water Temperature sensor masquerading as a Intake Air Temperature sensor."

How were "the first guys right" when they all said IAT, not water temp? And your link goes to IAT LOL.

Re: what is this sensor under plenum?

So does it work with egr the 2 wire sensor on the bottom of plenum, or for fuel mixture, or just for looks.

I said "Water Temp" because if you look at my link, you will understand why I said that. The sensor is a "Water Temp" sensor as being used as a air temperature sensor for the V8s vs the one they used for the V6 cars. One look at the pic of each in my link makes it obvious why.

As for your post....The is only 1 sensor in the bottom of the plenum & that is the IAT which is why your answer does not apply. My guess is that you are thinking of the manifold & not the plenum.

Thanks for explaining, that makes much more sense to me know. That is a great link and I want to do that mod now!

Not sure about a 350 as I have a 305, or maybe I don't know what a plenum is, but if I do I'm pretty sure that is not correct. On mine, the EGR valve is mounted exactly "under" mine (not to the manifold) and has a single-wire temp sensor. Hence why I clairified my suggestion with the "If it is a single black wire". Just trying to help, not trying to give bad answers.

Not sure I understand your question, and I am obviously not an expert here. But I'm pretty sure the EGR temp sensor does not use a 2-wire connector. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

Re: what is this sensor under plenum?

Ok so we've determined that it is a sensor of temperature, got it. Now My curiosity gets the better of me and would like know the who and why of this sensors task. If anybody knows please share, I have been conducting searches and trolling threads and all I know is it is a similar sensor to the CTS and maybe or maybe not there is a performance mod to move the location to the air box. Well that's all dandy but what does the ecu do with this info from the sensor. I am pretty sure it isn't fuel mixture on a MAF engine, can't believe it is for EGR because it already has its own sensor, so I ask why do we have it?

I've been asking this very same question on an earlier post with no replies...Maybe you will have better luck.

Re: what is this sensor under plenum?

It measures the air temp and send that signal to the computer. When it gets hot enough the computer will start to pull timing to avoid a spark knock. On the other side it can also add timing when it is cold.

The reason for using the open element design over the CTS style and moving its location is to get a more accurate reading of intake air temp. The open element will respond quicker to temperature changes than the closed CTS style element.

The factory location and sensor style is prone to reading too high of a temperature and in warmer climates will start to pull timing causing the car to run slower.
