Please help. Dont know whats wrong
I have an 86 T/A 5.0 TPI with a brand new transmission and when i do fast take offs sometimes the engine stays at whatever speed its at and makes a loud click click click noise like something is stuck and it wont speed up.(it does this off and on) it also does it when i remain at a certain speed. But when its parked and i rev the engine it seems to be smooth. What could it possibly be? Im guessing the throttle body but i have no idea. please let me know if anybody has had this problem and knows what the issue might be. Thank You

off the top of my head, i'd say make sure all your spark plug wires are connected to the spark plugs - make sure theres no arcking anywhere (header melting into a spark plug wire perhaps [causing an arc and a misfire].) aside from that, check under the hood for any burned wiring. outside of that, you may have to take it to a shop. if the car wasnt having these symptoms before the transmission rebuild but started having it immediately after, you might want to take it back to the transmission place and have them see whats up.

Sorry, didn't specify that it was occurring when i had the old transmission in it... but i did get headers and the spark plug heads are right on them so ill get some heat sleeves and see how that goes. As far as the wiring i had some spaghetti wire covers that melted but didn't melt the wire.... and there are some spark plug wires tied together, could that be a problem?(should they be separated).

uh-huh... if the spark plug wire boots ("heads") are already melted to the point that it could cause an arc, then you should replace the wires. however, if you find that they're not melted at all, then they your set up should be fine as is.
melted by the headers?
tied together as in ziptied? i dont think that would be a problem, at least not to cause the kind of symptom you're describing.
it could be a number of things, but the "clicking" sound you described made me think of arcking, but then again, i would expect that arcking to be accompanied by an ocassional, slight backfire through the exhaust.

btw, i cant think of anything that would cause a clicking noise to come from a throttle body. it is possible that you are experiencing symptoms assoiciated with a failing TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) which is located on the throttle body, but i would not expect any kind of audible cue to be associated with a bad TPS.

Yes and the headers are also wrapped

yes they are ziptied and the clicking noise is very load... its hard to describe almost like having a card on the wheel of a bycycle and the card smacking the spokes, it last about 6 seconds.

damn. okay.
the noise you describe sounds like a substantial exhaust leak, but the symptoms do not match. also, if it were an exhaust leak, the noise would be constant. if no one else here can come up with something, you may have to take it to a shop. i hope it is something simple and not crazy expensive to fix.
