L98 with a stick, what computer should I get?

I damaged my computer and I want to replace it (missing two pins). My car has an '87 iron head L98 with a t-5 behind it. The car currently has a 5-speed 305tpi chip in it, should I buy a replacement computer with the same chip or should I buy the L98 computer with the automatic tune? Can I use a computer from a corvette I have no way to tune the computer so I need something that runs ok with the t-5. I can re-pin the harness for a different ecm if it comes down to that. I'm planning on buying a remanufactured cardone computer from AutoZone with store credit.

All input is appreciated!

you can use the same 1227165 ecm just need 22#hr injectors for the l98 and your memcal reprogramed you can have a custom tune done or see if you can locate any of these broadcast code memcals. amj, aark, ama, aml, bum.

Re: L98 with a stick, what computer should I get?

Could run a chip from a 80's vette with a stick but problem is their timing is too high for iron heads. It will run but wont be perfect.

The 305 chip is fine just needs reprogrammed for 350 inj and perhaps bit more fueling due to 350 larger cubes and cam (if the 305 chip isnt setup with the l98 cam).
Thats what id do. Just get one burned for it based on 305 manual code

Forgot about that, didnt realize they got irons! 87 was the year of aluminums i believe but they had 128 and 113 castings out there. Good call

Re: L98 with a stick, what computer should I get?

Isn't the APYP BIN designed specifically for a stock iron headed l98 with a manial trans? I recall using that as the starting point for my motor years ago.

Either way, I would suggest getting a chip burned for you. There are a few mail order options that are highly reccommended on here.

And the 305 timing tables are substantially different than the 350 tables. Another vote for a custom burn.

Re: L98 with a stick, what computer should I get?

I thought the '86 vette had aluminum heads? I know for sure the '85s had iron heads, but they also had that one year MAF set up that I want nothing to do with.

I checked some other stuff on my car an I have 305 injectors also. I checked the heads and they are 14102193 cylinder heads off some horrible TBI truck , but I'm not sure about the block. I assume it's a 350 because when I bought the car they guy told me it was a 350 and I just put 350 head gaskets on it and they seemed to fit just fine. I haven't been able to read the block cast number yet. I believe the cam it has is too big also, I haven't even gotten that far yet.

Can the car run ok with 305 injectors and PROM? It has a bad miss when you try to hold rpm (at free rev), but it doesn't miss at WOT The miss is very noticeable when you drive too. It's coding that it's running rich (which is obvious) and that there is a problem with the knock sensor system. There has never been a wire connected to the sensor and it has never coded before till now... Could that cause my miss? I'm going to the junk yard soon to grab a knock sensor, pigtail, and non melted ECM connectors There are no emissions stuff on the car either.

I appreciate all the input! I think I might buy a cheap PROM tuner and try to learn how to retune it myself. But for now I think I should order an l98 auto computer and put my 305 PROM in it, then I will have both tunes.

Re: L98 with a stick, what computer should I get?

the question should be. The pins you pulled out, were they on the ecm or where the prom goes?? If your ECM is damaged then just use the Prom that is currently in their. If it is the prom, you can order exactly what is there and eliminate the guessing of whether this one or that one will work. Your L98 had iron heads and unless it was a MAP it will use the 1227165 ECM. You can order these just about anywhere.

Only 1986 Pace Car Corvettes got the aluminum heads. All 1987 up Corvettes had them.

Re: L98 with a stick, what computer should I get?

If you don't know for a fact it is a 350 I would verify that first... Did you not read casting numbers when you had the motor out for head gaskets? 350/T5 is not a factory combo after all.

TunedPerformance burned me a chip when I did my swap and runs great.
