89 TPI 350 Transplant - Exhaust Design/Components

There is a ton of information on this site regarding exhaust (I’ve read about backpressure and tuning to the point that my brain hurts). Since my application is a little different, I wanted to start a new thread.

I’m putting an 89 5.7 TPI into an FJ40. The engine is a 383 stroker (400 crank). Nothing fancy just built for reliability. It has a set of Hooker headers on it and I believe the opening at the collection is 2 ¼” (I need to double check – it might be 2 ½”). The vehicle is essentially a rock crawler that will be driven on the street as well. Top end speed is not important to me but low end grunt is. I’d like to build my own exhaust (can weld and have access to an exhaust tube bender) and need some input. I’m going to start building off of the headers and run down the driver’s side into a muffler then out the passenger side (not duals). An exhaust shop recommended a 14” turbo flow muffler. The vehicle does not need a cat but it does need spark arrest. I want it to sound good but too loud will get annoying on the trail.

I assume that I will start by matching the size of the tubing to the opening in the headers. From there, what size comes after the 2 into 1 collector (going towards the muffler)? And should the input and output size be the same on the muffler?

I'm open to any suggestions you guys might have.

Thanks much!

Lane
