TPI in '86 C10

Been hovering the forum for a bit and joined to use the search function and now finally getting things rolling. The truck is a factory tbi 305 backed by a 700r4 and a 8.5 10 bolt with 3.42's. The long term goal is a 350/4l80e swap with multi port fuel injection. After beating my head against the wall on how I want to go about this, I finally settled on a tpi swap ran by a Fast ez efi system. I don't want to do this all at once so the tpi on the 305 is first and since the Fast efi is self tuning, its just plug and play.
Heres the truck, an old pic but oh well:

.
Hers the tpi I picked up off a member here. Needs runners and a good cleaning.
.

.
Throttle body looked ok, just dirty. Going to delete the coolant pass also.
.

.
Plenum is getting ported. I heard the tb holes in the plenum were bad but this is terrible.

.
Needs a little port work here. seems gm could have done better.
.

.
And a few extras.

.
The main goal if just free up the pinch points and gasket match. Not looking to spin this thing to the moon.
The to do list so far, things will be added:
-Sell the 19# injectors, have 24#'s from another build.
-egr delete
-Get non dented runners
- New gaskets
-Tap fuel lines for AN fittings
-Clean and paint

Welcome..Great to see another Square with a TPI. Makes a great little truck motor. And looks cool too.
So let me understand this..You are going to use a Fast computer and harness to control the factory componants??

Yes. After dealing with tuning my gt, I just want something simple. I had my own software to tune gas ford engines 96 and up and really just got tired with it. I also dindnt want to burn prom after prom as I was bolting on parts.

Re: TPI in '86 C10

Well, its been a while since I updated this. Been working on porting the tpi off and on for the past couple weeks. As for the 305, well its getting pulled this winter. Picked up a 400 sbc complete and its at the machine shop now. Going .030 over with hyper pistons on factory 5.7 rods. Going to be about 9.5 to 1 with a set of tbi heads. Got the heads for $100 and theyre fresh rebuilds. Also have a roller cam speced out at .450/.460 lift with 202/207 duration @ .050. As you can guess, 4500 rpm's is about max with this setup. Im hoping for 325+ fwhp but I know 525-550 fwtq will be there just because of 406 cubes. Anyway, heres a couple pics of the tpi, just needs smoothing out now.

Re: TPI in '86 C10

well I have everything except the head side of the manifold rough ported and I started making everything smooth. I also picked up a set of slp runners. the ends have been worked on a small bit. turns out my plenum matched really close to the runners and it was ported before I even bought the.

.
I do have to tap this egr passage for obvious reasons.

Re: TPI in '86 C10

Havent had a chance to port on the intake lately but did get the short block back today.
sbc 400, .030 over and decked .010
hypereutectic pistons, 22cc dish
factory chevy 5.7 rods, did have to notch rods for the large base circle cam
factory 400 turned crank
Lt1 roller cam, .450/.460 lift, 202/207 duration @.050
Summit double roller timing gears/chain
Rotating assembly has been balanced and the block was maged for cracks

Re: TPI in '86 C10

The build kinda took a curve but here's the 406's first start up. The idle was set high at 900 rpm's and we wasn't suppost to rev it since the EZ EFI was in learning mode, hince why it wanted to die, and we had a faulty weld on the valve cover causing oil to drip on the header causing the smoke. But all in all, the motor ran smooth. We also had a pin hole in the bottom coolant hole. Hopefully tomorrow we can get these things fixed and break this in.
