85 distributor upgrade.

Ok so i was givn an engine and trans out of an 85 iroc-z (lb9) it did not have a distributor on it. Iv been doing a lot of research on these engines over the past 6mo or so but never realy looked into the dizzys so now its time to drop it in and no dizz. I would like to do an performance one since i have everything else perf. In it. But unsure of how to select one. Can someone point me in the right direction. I found this one but again am unsure if it will work.

Re: 85 distributor upgrade.

Can't use that distributor with TPI, you need something computer-compatible.

A stock replacement one would be fine.

Re: 85 distributor upgrade.

It might be easier to find one on corvette forum. The hei computer controlled dizzy was used in the f body tpi from 85-86 and the y-body 85-91

Ok rephrased coil in cap hei, if you harness is hacked up you can used the small distributor 87-92 tpi/tbi or easily build a adapter harness to convert the est icm plug.

Re: 85 distributor upgrade.

The Icm 4 wire connector would née to be changed. You need a pigtail jumper from the icm to the coil for icm power and coil trigger and the power and tach lead of your body harness needs the ends changed.

Re: 85 distributor upgrade.

If your going to have the harness reworked now would be a great time to toss the 870 ecm and go with the 165 ecm or speed density 730 ecm.

What are the gains of doing this? And what else is involved besides changing the wiring?

Re: 85 distributor upgrade.

The baud rate , throttle response hardware on calibrations of the 1226870 ecm sucks IMO.
It would be a change in repinning and rewiring.
