carb to tpi 305

may already be posted somewhere else, not to sure, but I found the same year (85) tpi/engine harness/ecm for my z28 lg4 I have trick flow 175 cc heads a new cam and headers lifters, 1.6 rockers, double roller timing chain, I know I would need a new fuel tank (baffled inside) new fuel pump longer throttle cable upper radiator hose new fans.... all the big stuff but was wondering if any one could advise, I know its not as easy as it seems but is it overly difficult to swap? also the tpi is off a 350 which is why I mentioned my head upgrades and what not would I benefit from the 22# or should I order 19#? im so anxious to get started my car is still in Missouri safe from salt! till mid may. and have been staring at these parts for 3 months now

Re: carb to tpi 305

So you have a high output L69 engine and are swapping the engine harness to a LB9 TPI harness from 85 but swapping the tpi intake from a 350 TPI?

The 305 and the 350 TPI intakes are basically the same thing, but the one thing to note is that during the 350 era engines for the TPI, they used centerbolt style heads that are at a different angle than the perimeter heads. It also would be good to know if that TPI intake you are using is from a MAF style TPI or a speed density car (and also if its an Fbody TPI or corvette TPI).

Also, 1985 was a weird year for TPI. Some of the electronics are specific for that model year like the MAF, ECM and the MAF burnoff module that is piggy backed to the ECM.

If you are interested in ever doing you own tuning you might want to do a search for repinning the 85 ECM harness for using the '165 ECM that was used from 86-89 MAF systems and which the parts are plentiful for (and which would be easier to jump into tuning because lots of people do the $6E tuning). You would also need to find a 165 ECM and memcal, Bosch MAF (which has the burnoff module on the side) and IIRC add another relay.

Re: carb to tpi 305

the entire tpi setup cam e from an 85 camaro (same year as mine) i have an LG4 not l69 but i have a 268xfi cam and trickflow heads
the tuning will probably take place at TPiS as i live 12 miles from there shop in chaska mn, i read on a site that as long as it was from the same year, same body (camaro) it should swap right over

If you haven't already converted the harness to run the 1227165 ecm now would be the time or buy an newer 86-89 harness. The 870 ecm from 85 is slow and problematic.http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap/

however i know already the gas tank needs swapped (baffled) the t.v cable throtttle cable and cruise cable need new, tpi is longer, the fuel line has to be extended over to the opposit side its on now and need to swap to a in tank fuel pump for the tpi.

ok so pretty much not worth it then cause the setup i found is from an 85, be better off buying a comp and a matching harness from hawks and the manifold from TPiS

I don't follow, the big mouth is no longer made and the miniram would be a waste of to put on a 305. A 89-92 throttlebody will work on tour tpi and the throttle cable is only 28 from gmpartsdirect direct. You will need to buy a used throttle cable if you don't have one already.

Re: carb to tpi 305

Sounds like it would be a straight forward swap since you have the same year components. The 165 ECM is an upgrade from the 85 ECM.

Here is a website to a gentleman who did the upgrade and he details what needs to be changed over:
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap/

BTW: You need to run fuel injection lines from the fuel tank, did you grab a set of TPI lines from an fbody? The TPI runs at around 40psi

well everything i got and am getting for my 305 will be going to a 350 within the next couple of years, i MAY buy better heads for the 350 ill see when i get that far i dont know enough to say for sure but the trick flow heads i got now are only 56cc so unless i want a high compression N/A 350 ill step up to heads with a larger chamber, considering ive already bought 1200$ heads 250$ cam and lifter 250 intake and 200 rockers most would say ive already wasted money on the 305, plus the carb i will end up with if i dont got the tpi route (again would require a new fuel tank and pump) is 514 dollars so ill probably keep with the carb on the 305 and consider tpi when i got to a 350
