Rough Idle When Cold Need TPI Help!
Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased a 87 GTA 305 TPI 5-speed from a local auction. The car was not in running condition when I got it. I found out that all that was wrong was the fuel pump. Once I changed the fuel pump it fired right up. The smell of the gas fumes were horrible and I could tell that this car had been sitting for a long time. It will not hold an idle when I start the car, if i hold my foot on the pedal and let it warm up it will purr at 900-1000 rpms. My other f-body is a carbureted car so im new to this TPI stuff. Any one out there able to help?

If it's been sitting for a while, it could be a lot of things. The first thing I would suspect is that the injectors may be clogged up or sticking. I would also check for cracked or loose vacuum hoses. If you do a search here for "rough idle" you'll find a lot of past discussions on the causes and fixes for the problem.

Put some new gas "premium." A quick tune up; plugs, wires, distributor cap, change the oil and coolant flush. Then go from there.

Thanks guys. I have changed the plugs and that seemed to clean up the miss but not the rough idle. I will get some new high test gas and put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank and see if that cleans it up.

if you can hold the idle with your foot, try adjusting the TPS. Also, i'm not sure if you have a Cold Start Injector, but if you do, search for topics covering that thing.

Now when it comes to adjusting a Carb im fine, but you suggested adjusting the TPS. How do you adjust the TPS. Also it holds a good idle where it should once its warm so if I adjust the TPS wouldnt it screw up once its warm and be too high?

There is a tech article about it here:

If you do a search here on "tune up", "idle adjustment", and such you can find a lot of past discussion on the topic.

I am having a similar problem and found a kit to delete the 9th injector all together. Won't doing that make it impossible to start normally?

Re: Rough Idle When Cold Need TPI Help!
i know this is an old one, but ... from what i have read, the cold start injector has nothing to do with the cold idle, and only comes on when the key is in the start position under 95 deg ... i am also having this cold idle trouble, did it ever get fixed, and if so what was it

Re: Rough Idle When Cold Need TPI Help!
Barlow8869, No I never did completely fix this problem. as mentioned at first in this thread, I just did your routine tune up (plugs, wires, air filter, cap/rotor, fresh gas w/additive) and it cleaned up most of it.
The only reason i haven't went crazy and made sure everything was perfect is, I plan on doing a motor swap this summer rather put my money into getting things I need for that.
Sorry I couldnt be more help, best of luck though!
