Where to stop head cam,, before the Swap?

Catchy title LOL

This is not another lb9 305 what hp can I get thread. I know there are a million on here. But is more from personal experience from your swaps from a lb9 to the 355.

I have a 305 TPI getting worked on now. I will drive with few bolt ons and paint and do interior and once bored with the HP (maybe not) I will want to look at a swap since the engine I assume will be tired.

I do not want to waste a lot on money into the 305 for 280rwhp when for little more I can get 380 with a 355. But I will keep the 305 for now, unless it is totally shot once the shop is done with the basic tuneups.

I will do the basic that will swap over to a 355. So 3.42 (I have auto n posi G80) headers exhaust fuel pump injectors and play with moates to learn tuning and have fun dial it in maybe be at 230rwhp 300ftlbs

My question is for those that have done the above and have just did a cam (im thinking new springs and comp x256) but something that works with stock heads. Or those that did cam and mild head work then swapped to a 355 bottom end was the lb9 cam/head upgrade worth the extra juice compared swapping the 355?

I am thinking if I get the basics done headers gear exhaust tune is another $700 say for cam and head swap/work on the lb9 extra hp and SOTP that you prolonged the or postponed a 355 swap? and for those that did swap was it still night and day the 355 vs a mild cam/headed lb9

was the juice worth the squeeze?

I am leaning towards probably not. Get her running, clean up make engine look good, play with moates and fuel and AFR. then spend the money a mild 355 bottom end and just swap the bottom out. Maybe do mild head work on the 355 and a much better cam with the TPI setup and I hope to be over 300RWHP

I know the TPI is limiting but not point of this question here. Once the 355 is in I can take my time and do a future HSR swap myself.

You say the 305 is not a keeper so why put $$ into it that could possibly get you into a 350 sooner?

Re: Where to stop head cam,, before the Swap?

You are right. I was wondering if a few hundred bucks (maybe up to $500) on a cam swap or head swap with used work heads is worth it as a stop gap on the 305 while I wait possibly till next year for a new engine (since I still have to paint body and interior)

But I will be driving the 305, maybe longer then I want, so a little more power would be nice to play with
