Airbox gutting results?

How's it going, I have been reading up on gutting airboxes and was wondering if there are actually any performance gains? Such as performance I can actually feel? I have been considering this because it is free and I'm a high school kid, so money is pretty tight. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: Airbox gutting results?

I've noticed that my tires chirp more often during the 1st to 2nd gear shift during the winter when I drop the gas pedal.

Worked for me- especially at higher speeds.

Re: Airbox gutting results?

There is a thread here somewhere where a person went even further. He used a heat gun or a hair drier to soften the plastic and re-form it to make the passages larger. Claimed that it also helped.

A search may bring it up, I wish I recalled more about it for search terms.

RBob.

I dis see thread where a guy seperated the upper and lower section of the dual intake. He then added around .5" inbetween the upper and lower section of the dual snorkel housing. I don't recall the results. It's been around a year since I read the mod.

Re: Airbox gutting results?

I gutted my air box and it helped a good bit. I later made a ram air intake that made a real difference. Both modifications are definitly worth it.

Re: Airbox gutting results?

It's a free mod might as well. with airflow going stright though instead of going though baffles and mazes.

I noticed a difference.

I did it years ago. I really haven't noticed any difference.

Re: Airbox gutting results?

I noticed a slight increase in pull but nothing to ride home about.. Hard to say if it's psychological or real world improvement.

Re: Airbox gutting results?

Gutting the air boxes certainly won't hurt anything, but as far as performance goes, you probably won't notice a difference. With all the research I've done it seems that the base intake manifold is the biggest restriction in the fuel/air delivery. Until you upgrade that other mods (throttle body, runners, ect.) won't have a big effect on power.
