l31 cam in 305 tpi?
Ok so i came close to selling my girl due to buying another car but decided not to.
So this my deal i do not want to put a 350 in her ive got a bbc inthe other car. I
just want to have a cheap rebuild for daily driving and some autocross.
. It has a 305 tpi with 416' cast heads and the peanut cam. ive got sone parts laying around like 1.5 roller tip rockers m/t valvecovers and a l31 cam and friend of mine is giving me some flat top 4 valve relief pistons.... i guess my question is the l31 cam a good up grade from the peanut cam?

It'll be a little bit of an upgrade. I did the LT1 cam in my 305, which is just a little bigger than the L31 cam and it runs good. I also have 416 heads that I ported and the combo works really well.

Not much of a upgrade
191/ 196 .414 /.442
Less duration and similar lift to the 305 cams

Prolly just c if i cant find a cheapo used lt1 cam somewhere then. Already spent close to a thousand on rear supension a year ago might as well spend alittle extra for used cam.

I think the 86 is a flat taped motor. LT1 cams are roller cams. You need to retrofit your block.

Mine is running fine on the factory tune, although I believe there will be a bit better fuel economy and a few more horses to be had with a tuned chip. Mine has shorty headers , full 3" mandrel pipe, ported heads ,intake manifold , runners, and plenum with a set of hyperutetic pistons and the LT1 cam.

I put an LT1 cam in my L69, and it really woke it up. If the block you have did not have roller cam in it before, you will need a bunch of other stuff too ( Dogbones, holddown spider, pushrods, cam retainer, roller cam timing set, maybe self aligning rocker arms). ECM was fine with the change. MAF adjusted with no issues.

There are better cams out there but they cost $$$
The LT1 cam is a popular swap because it can be had for free or next to nothing
and it only costs your time and some gaskets to fit to a OEM roller block.

I like the factory LT4 and ZZ4 cams, cheap, make great power and have good driveability.

Re: l31 cam in 305 tpi?
I like the lt4 hotcam i was gonna use that with a l31 with 906 heads i have but i really would rather keep the 305
And use all these 305 parts i have lying around then spend a tone of money on a daily driver and use on auto cross.
