Timing a 1987 LB9 Iroc



Not sure where the timing should be here's where it is currently. Doesn't seem right. All the stickers in my engine bay are gone (the car was stored by the PO outside for a decade), so that info is gone. If anyone could tell me the factory prescribed timing, that would be great. The car is an 87 iroc, 305 lb9, 700r4. Thanks for reading!

It needs to go up to atleast the big V (0*) if not one or two little v's past the big one in the opposite direction right now ur at 2* retarded

Wait I think ur at 6* retarded .. Not good ... U need to unplug the est wire then crank the car then set timing then turn car off then plug est wire back up

By the book, the timing should be set to 6* BTDC.

jesus, no wonder the exhaust has been smelling so bad. I've been working on this thing for like a year just assuming that the timing was still factory since I'm the 2nd owner and the PO didnt know anything about working on cars... That would explain a lot! Hope I didnt damage anything by running so many times with wacky timing. Thanks for the speedy responses!

The ECM take control of engine timing after the engine rpm is higher than 600rpm.
For this reason a "Set Timing Connector" must be disconnected to disable the ECM control and allow setting the static baseline timing. The engine must be at normal operating temperature.

Don't forget to reconnect the connector after you're done.

the factory setting is 6 deg BTDC

It most likely is. Look for the underhood label to confirm. Hopefully the label is still there.

That label could still be there. Hard to tell though. I haven't seen the hood for a couple years..... LOL

The motor in question is in my Sonoma. The emisions label on it says something like 2.2L??



I set it at 6 and seems to work.
