Starting issue, it cranks

I have a 89 gta 350 that won't start, I turn the key fuel pump runs for 2 seconds stops, I crank car and it won't start. If I immediately shut it off and turn it back on the fuel pump does not run, but I was told that is normal, maybe a minute later it will prime upon starting again. When I Crank for 10 seconds oil pressure goes up to 15 still won't start. It's a new fuel pump and the car ran great for awhile then ran crappy for awhile then it stopped starting. The car did sit for awhile months back but has ran since new pump. There is no fuel pressure at the engine port. Where should I look? I see Ecm, oil pump, oil pressure switch, electrical. Is there a easy place start? I am not a mechanic but can figure it out with a little guidance Thanks Kevin

Re: Starting issue, it cranks

Should be TPI, so get a Fuel Pressure gauge to start with, and screw it into the shrader valve...you want one that goes to like a 100PSI...not a 25 PSI tester...we need...want to see what fuel pressure it...now, what kind of pump did you install?

I had bad luck with a "new" AC Delco made in mexico off ebay...tested fine out of the box...3 weeks later dropped the tank, installed the pump...dead as a door nail.

Now, poor mans test (get some rags. put your smoke out, pressure the rails, and depress the sharder valve, looks like a metal tvalve stem, but should be in the rear on the pass side fuel rail...fuel should squirt up noticably..hence having rags around the area.

If fuel squirts up...pull an injector plug...you have to takee a clip off first///sorta push in on the clip, use a 90 degree pick and pull one side back towards you...the needle nose pliers and pull the clip out...keep track of the clip, you want to put it back

Now pull the injector harness, and see if you have 12v (with key in "run") on the connector...if so...and you have fuel pressure...get a "noid light"...cheap...4-5 bucks, plug it in to the connector, have some one turn the car to start, and see if the light is flickering.

Now there...that will keep ya busy tomorrow

Thanks Mike, I forgot to mention there was no fuel pressure at the port on the motor.

I see...I'd assumed when you said "ran great, then stopped"...you meant the engine...but you're referring to the fuel pump not running instead?

Hmnn..when you changed the pump, what did the inside of the tank look like?...crusty?

Have you replaced the fuel filter yet?

I would suggest pulling one spark plug boot off and sticking a screwdriver into the boot. Then lay the screwdriver near (1/16th inch) metal and see if it arcs. Arc or No arc?

Your fuel pump behavior is normal.
