do you have to get a new chip w/ 112lsa????

i need to get a cam for when i do my tpi swap because the one i currently have wont work so well w/ it. i'm gonna run a maf system w/ a stock chip to start, then i'm gonna get into programming. obviously i need a place to start w/ that so i think it'll be best to use a stock chip and slowly make some changes to see whats better. anyway, i need to make sure i'm gonna start w/ a good cam. i know 110 lsa is too small for tpi, but will 112 cause problems w/ a stock chip? what about 114?? im probably gonna keep the duration under 220, but what about lift? does this have any drastic affect on the computer? im looking to get at least .460-.470 lift or higher. I'm most likely gonna get a set of fresh heads cut for better springs and i think i'll clean them up a bit before i put them on. also plan to port out the intake parts a bit too. any info/comments/suggestions are greatly aoppreciated...thanks!

That cam doesn't look that arrgressive I would say you should be fine. The 112 LSA is great for tpi cars. When you get a cam with higher numbers, say 224/232 dur. and above .530 lift then you should be thinking about a custom prom. Also MAF cars tend to be more "forgiving" with cam changes, ect.

Definitely duration has the most detrimental effect on the ECM (and eprom), much more so than lift. The narrower LSAs do pose some tuning problems with the eprom - especially at idle.

While MAF can detect extra flow, it does nothing to help with the spark advance and if you don't properly control the spark advance with the Knock Sensor, you may find that the ECM is pulling far too much spark out to make the power it can.

Also, if you change the injectors, you will run far too rich.

But the main problem is, in all cases you will not be running an optimal eprom. What you are saying is the equivalent of adding a cam to an engine and saying "and I am going to leave my carb setup exactly as it came stock on the engine". Any one who works with carbs knows that unless the cam change was really small, that you should rejet the carb and adjust the idle screws if you want to get the power you should out of your cam swap.

A carb is a much simpler device and if you think you would have to adjust your carb for another cam, then you will DEFINTELY need to change your eprom as it controls even more.

No one buys a carb and installs it "out-of-the-box" as sent by the manufacturer - yet people suggest this with eproms when they control even more.

I recommend that you should learn how to burn your own eprom first. You can get increases in performance and gas mileage on a basically stock engine once you practice and master the "tuning" by the eprom. Then, as you make changes, you can modify your eprom accordingly to take full advantage of those modifications. This is the perfect way to learn how to burn eproms and slowly modify the eprom to match your engine as you are building it.

Without the proper eprom, you may make a combo that performs worst than the stock engine and blame the combo instead of the eprom.
