So I have a heavily modified set of SLP runners. Cut, ported, welded, etc. etc. The base is a heavily ported stock base from Darin at High Flow Fuel Injection. Bought off a member here. Super nice work, but the manifold ports are about 1/16" total diameter smaller than the runners. I do NOT intend to mess up the gorgeous ports by reporting the whole port, BUT....I would like to eliminate the step, by smoothing the entrance into the base/port.
A) is it worth doing?
B) How far do I need to go into the manifold port? ...again, not looking for volume, but to rather just elimate that harsh transition from runner to base.
Re: Runners ported LARGER than manifold. Questions.
You definitely don't want the manifold smaller than the runners. It's best to have a perfect match, but the next best thing is to have the manifold opening slightly larger than the runners. I'd suggest using a 1.5" drum sander like this:
That's what I use to get a perfect circle and finish up that side of the transition. You don't have to remove much, but you'll probably want to go about 1.5 - 2" in the port to blend and smooth things out.
Re: Runners ported LARGER than manifold. Questions.
That's what I'm thinking too. ....all I have is a small 3" bench grinder with a dremel/flex extension, but I DO have carbide bits and cartridge rolls. ...so far so good. almost done with the first two ports. Again, this is more gasket matching, and not so much actually creating volume.
Re: Runners ported LARGER than manifold. Questions.
I do believe you would save a ton of time with the 1.5" drum. I use it with a drill. Even buying a cheap drill if you don't have one would be worth it in my opinion. We're talking about a minute (maybe two) per port with the drum sander and its a snap to make a perfect CNC looking circle.
Re: Runners ported LARGER than manifold. Questions.
Abubaca, I would really focus on making sure you don't have any overhang on the gasket (The roof area looked a lil suspect) overall looks like you should see some nice gains, that's pretty opened up. I'm almost motivated to pull my vortec base and start grinding.
Re: Runners ported LARGER than manifold. Questions.
I'm honestly not sure what gaskets they are. I have a set of Accel gaskets, and these are ever so slighly larger. I got them when I purchased the runners.
...I check all four "pairs" if you will, and there's no part that's really any more than 1/32" if even that much. I hate using the term good enough, but these are so darn close, if not perfect. I'm calling it "good enough", LOL. ...plus the roof is getting pretty thin!
Re: Runners ported LARGER than manifold. Questions.
Still some meat left in there they have more than some think just a matter if you want to make a career out of a base or not lol
Least you got it matched time to scew it together!

lol, yeah....I don't claim to have the skills to really dig in and make a real difference. The two guys who did the work, Darin on the base, Steve Mack on the TPI, both did awesome work. I just wanted to get it all gasket matched.
...hey CuisinartVette...guy on my FB page saw the pics and asked if I did porting work. I told him no. ....are you still doing porting?
