New MAF Issues

Hi everyone,

I have an 88 GTA 5.0 and recently bought a new MAF for it. Reason being because I'm dealing with a misfire/bucking issue under acceleration/load and I've been getting engine code 36. The new MAF is a reman and when I installed it and ran it for a few days, my code and the misfire were still there. I've heard of people having issues like this with new MAFs and was wondering if anyone knew what I could do to possibly fix this. The car is in storage for winter now so I want to take the down time to try and work on it a little bit.

do not EVER buy a re man MAF !! go to oreilleys and get yourself a "rich-porter" brand new MAF. and be done with all that . also have a look at your MAF power and burn off relays.

Re: New MAF Issues

I did replace my burnoff relay. The previous owner must have done something with it as well before me because it was coated in some kind of gunk on the inside. I'm definitely not happy with the MAF, especially since the brand got pretty decent reviews, but maybe your both right. I'll give that rich-porter a look.

Not trying to advertise, but, for that you can go with the EBL flash. Eliminate the MAF and have ultimate tuning capabilities.

Re: New MAF Issues

What does that EBL include and how would that affect emissions. I'm usually exempt anyway but you never know. Is it a tune for the computer I'd assume?

That's the site. Tell you all you'd wanna know. In a nutshell replaces your ECM with a fully programmable one. No more burning chips. The maker is a very active member and moderator here on the boards, RBob. Extremely helpful and very quick to answer and questions you'd have. Everyone that has one absolutely loves it.

Re: New MAF Issues

unfortunately , you are correct. i have found that "spectra" has bought "rich-porter" and so , there are NO MORE NEW ones to be had. and all that A1 cardone re man stuff is JUNK right off the shelf. i went through 7 of them , the last one didnt even make it out of the parking lot . so , be advised.

Re: New MAF Issues

After slacking off all winter and not doing anything with my car, I went ahead just now and purchased the Wells SU-145. Found it on RockAuto listed as AIRTEX / WELLS 5S2640 (SU145). Hopefully it'll be here early this coming week, and I'll have a smooth running bird.

I'm pretty sure it's the same design as the RP unit, so should be good. I bought a NOS RP unit off eBay and have had no issues.

Hopefully. If not, I'll return it. My only concern is that it says it fits for 1986-87 models, but I have an 88. I can't see it being that big of an issue but who knows.

$104 is better than $410. Like I said if it doesn't work I'll return it and try something else. Not the end of the world here.

Everything indicates the Airtex/Wells units are the same design as the RP units.

A MAF is not a cutting edge piece of technology. The components are fairly cheap. As long as they stuck to the design it should be a-ok.

Let us know how it goes.

Regarding the EBL Flash- you need to change to MAP which is absolutely no solution in my opinion. Though I'd love to.

That depends if it's listed as new or reman. Was Airtex/Wells not the people who had the patent on this design? ALL of these new MAFs seem to appear to be the same design. They all likely come from one factory in China, and are just branded. There is nothing wrong with China. As it goes for anything, you get what you pay for. You're speaking of cheap Chinese goods. No one has ever made anything cheaply that was good, and that includes 'merica.
