305 to 383 Vortec tpi

Hi everyone

I sold my paxton sc to fund my 383 build for my 89 formula. i am hoping to do better than a 14.2 1/4 mile. i finally gave up on my 305 even though it ran with no problems

The build is as follows:
Vortec heads 062 with blending and unshrouding and upgraded valve springs cca-981 with pinned studs
factory stamped rocker arms
XR269 CC Cam
Eagle Rotating Assembly B13404L 12cc dish piston hypereutectic al and Cast crank
Machined block 2 bolt single piece rear main seal
Ported plenum, accel runners mild port on entry, sdpc intake mild port on entry
summit 2600rpm torque converter
30# injectors
700R4 tranny with 3.73 rear end
350 knock sensor and esc module

I am hoping for low 13's and dreaming about high 12's

I have a couple questions
Is it possible or safe to start with stock chip? I understand it will probably be very rich but i just want to make sure it starts- I have a chip from tuned performance with 30# injectors burned. Since i have never used it previously i dont want to introduce any possible issues

Any guesses for fwhp and 1/4 time? I am guessing maybe 350 fwhp but hoping for more

Thanks Marco

Re: 305 to 383 Vortec tpi

My experience says injectors mis-matched to the chip will foul the spark plugs VERY fast and give you terrible start/idle/drivability issues. I had horrible issues with a stock chip (22#) and 27# injectors... just starting, idling and a test drive around the neighborhood. Once I put the 27# chip with the 27# injectors, along with a fresh set of spark plugs, the engine ran MUCH better.

What I'd do is work with someone who does chips and have them make one for me to start with based on guestimates, then once the car is running datalog and final tune.

Re: 305 to 383 Vortec tpi

you have so many things different trying to use your stock chip is just going to give you problems

- the injector characteristics are going to give you fits compared to what is in the stock chip tables

- also the breathing obviously of the engine is going to be much, much different

if you have worked with tuned performance to get you a base config that at least has the right injector characteristics i would start with that

when i did my ZZ4 TPI with EBL ECM even with the injector set right for the 32 lb / hr i was using i needed to make quite a bit of VE table changes to get it to run reasonably

Re: 305 to 383 Vortec tpi

looks good, also probably just bad luck on our part, but we have a weep, seep, etc on our vortec sdpc base install we just did this spring on my son's formula with new ZZ5 crate engine. not terrible, but we will be taking the intake back off in a couple weeks to correct it.

we used fel pro 1255 gasket and the red rtv around the water ports, etc... we will be going to the MS98000T gasket... i did another one last year without trouble but it seems their is mixed thoughts on the 1255... don't know what you used but just fyi as you haven't installed yet

Re: 305 to 383 Vortec tpi

I used 1255
I hope this doesn't cause any issues

Btw gbayfischer emailed me some tunes with injector constant changed- he has the 383 with a first tpi. At least now I have a few chips to play around with to get started. Need a burner. Any suggestions auto prom is sold out til mid June ?

Re: 305 to 383 Vortec tpi

Car started for first time last night with stock tune and old plugs. It went pretty well. No leaks or bad sounds. I will be switching to new prom this weekend. Idles kinda rough at 900 rpm but doesn't die. Need to shift to N at lights or do the two foot thing to keep it going. Feels good so far but I don't want to rev to high until engine break in is complete maybe 300 km and I get my subframe connectors.
