What RPMs should my engine rev up to?
I am just about finished with my Carb to TPI swap and was wondering about the RPM powerband.
How high should it rev to?
With my carb setup, I'd shift at 5000rpm, since I'd feel a power loss if I pass that.
Car is an 86 Trans Am LG4 with 5 speed.
Here is what I have on the car now,
SLP Dual Cold Air intake
Crane Cams PowerMax 2050
52mm Throttle Body
87 TPI heads, Stock
MSD 6A with Blaster 3 Coil
Dynomax Shorty Headers
PaceSetter 3" Catback with no cat
87 TPI unit, stock
91 Speed Density ECM
SLP 91 Camaro 5 Speed Prom

Here is the dyno sheet that Desktop Dyno created,

Thanks in advance,

Mine usually drops off in power around 5000rpm as well... I will find out for sure next season when I go to the dyno shop.
May I get a copy of your dyno file? I have DeskTop dyno as well, just curious what you used. Cause my torque starts beyond 2000RPM.

You'll be lucky to pull to 5500 rpms... if you even get that far. One problem I see with your setup is that even though you have a better breathing intake and a larger throttle body to help with the breathing, the heads are STOCK. Basically with those heads on there you've wasted your money on the intake and TB because those heads don't breath well at all. The valves aren't even 1.94/1.50.... they're 1.74/1.40 or something like that. Small valves + small ports = no breathing. Another thing that helps with the revving is the rotating assembly. You can rev a completely balanced engine higher than a non balanced engine. Also, a kit with 6" rods will rev higher and quicker because the pistons are shorter and weigh alot less to compensate for the slightly longer rod. I revved my stock 305 TPI all the way to 5,000 and still felt a pull. My 355 TPI setup that I just put in my TA pulled hard all the way to 5,000 but I don't want to rev it any higher until I get some more mileage on it. I have a 6" rod 355 engine kit completely balanced and heads with 1.94/1.50 valves and I'm expecting to rev to 6,000 at the track this summer. Change your heads and I'm sure you'll be able to hit 6,000 easy.

Thanks,
I have an extra set of heads sitting around, I guess I'll have a shop look at them and see what can be done to them.
