Speedometer Noise!

When it gets cold outside (below say 25* F) my speedometer makes a loud buzzing noise and the needle bounces around alot. It doesn't do it when it is warmer outside. I was told that the cable probably needs oiled and it will stop. I was told how to do this, but I don't know what kind of lubricant to use. Has anyone else experienced this that might give me some pointers? Thanks

Matt

When mine started squealing I just went ahead and replaced it, but before I put it in I picked up this stuff in a little red tube from the dealer, they told me to use it, and it was this super fine charcoal-looking powder, some sort of dry lubricant. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called, but I remember what it looked like. Sorry I'm not that much help but I'm about 5,000 miles from my home right now....

That's cool man. I'll try and call the dealer and see what they say. I just replaced the cable 2 yrs ago I think. I don't know why it is squealing already. Thanks though.

Yes, your speedometer cable needs lubed.

The black powder "dry lubricant" mentioned above is powdered graphite. Basicaly the same as ground pencil lead.
It will lubricate the cable for a while but it's not very long lasting.

I use spray-on clinging motorcycle chain lube. It lasts literaly for decades on speedo cables.

To apply it, disconnect the cable at the back of the speedo. Pull the inner cable all of the way out of the outer cable/housing. The spray lube usually has a small tube with it to attach to the nozzle (like most spray cleaners and lubes) Insert the end of the tube into the cable housing. Spray the lube generously into the housing. Be careful with this stuff. It is slick but kind of sticky/clingy too. If you drip it on your carpet or seats it will be very hard to remove and will probably stain and attract dirt. I put down a large plastic trash bag under where I'm working to save headaches. Have a rag or two handy too. I then insert the inner cable into the housing a little at a time while gently spraying it with the lube as it goes in. When you get it fully inserted and seated, wipe off any excess lube from the housing and connect it back on the speedo.
You (or anyone else that ever owns this car) should never have to worry about it again.
