charcoal canister air connection routing help

guys, i took just enough photos back in March to put this evidence together. where does the short line on top get connected? or am i totally out of whack? i know the longer hose gets routed out the bottom of car, but can’t seem to recall a connection for the top shorter one. is it just open air?

Take a look at the top of the canister, IIRC, it is molded in 'AIR'. Or something of that nature.

On a '90 that T hose setup fits into the open fender area. One hose up, the other down.

yes, this is the “air” connection that i am questioning. i know one side goes down into bottom of car, it’s the shorter side of the tee that seems out of place. is it also exposed to atmosphere?

On my 91 TPI, the port labeled "AIR" is open to the atmosphere. It has a dust cap on it that allows air to enter during purge but keep water and such from getting in.

Yes, the long hose goes down, the short hose goes up.

Thanks! what is the purpose of "Air" - is it to dump fuel or to suck in air?

Re: charcoal canister air connection routing help

When the canister isn't being purged it allows air to exit the canister. This is due to fumes entering from the gas tank.

During a purge cycle it allows air into the canister to replace what is purged into the engine.

huh, wonder why GM felt the need for 2 hoses - one up and one down. I was thinking if fuel was exiting the up hose could facilitate preventing vapor lock, but would the reverse be true?
