Cold air intake "HELP"

Hey guys I have a 1986 Trans AM with a 305TPI and I am looking for a cold air intake, I can't seen to find one. Does anyone know if there is a cold air intake out there where buy?

Thanks

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

You might get this to work, but building your own might be better it still gets hot air from the engine compartment.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

If you're looking for a true cold air intake, that's a total waste of money. Unless you get the tube picking up air from completely outside the engine compartment, you're not getting any benefit from that. All you're doing is picking up hot air from somewhere else In the engine compartment.

And even if you make a true cold air intake, to get the full benefit you need to get the MAT sensor out of the intake plenum and retune the ECM to tell it you have a remote MAT sensor. A 180 thermostat to keep the intake manifold a little cooler will probably help a little too.

After that you may be able to play with the fueling depending on how the fuel trims look.

in the absence of the above, you have just a cosmetic change that "looks cool" when you pop the hood.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

Here's a picture of the best one I've seen for the Pontiacs.

I believe that's a Ram Aix Box for the filter case. Unfortunately I'm not sure where the inlet "scoop" is from.
You may find something workable here.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

I missed that TPI part.
With the other style posted (with a cone filter on the end of the inlet pipe) people have had success by cutting a hole in the tray (on the side opposite the battery) and fitting the filter below and outside of the engine compartment. Not sure if I'm not entirely onboard with filter hanging out there but it is an option. There's another thread here with someone who's adapted the cone filter approach and built a shielding box around the filter tucked into the corner near the rad. Not unlike what some of the newer models are doing OEM. (I'll post the link if I can find it)
The other is determining if the Camaro TPI filter cases would adapt to the Firebird. I haven't looked at the logistics but it's a thought although not having seen it done may indicate it's lack feasibility.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

SLP was the only company that previously sold cold air kits for the firebird. They have long since stopped and are expensive and hard to find used. If you do not mind cutting a hole best bet would be to remove the air filter canister and cut a hole for the pipe to go thru and mount a filter underneath. I had done this modification years ago but have since cut the hole bigger and mounted a 4thgen overflow tank. If you do not want to cot a hole your limited to modifying the canister to accept some flexible hose to route to fender.
Here is a link to another discussion chasing the same issue. Nice pic of the SLP unit in thread also

There is someone on eBay selling “three” SLP cold air intake systems. Not that you need three but I don’t think he will sell the separately but it’s worth asking. Good luck!

I saw that. I believe they are being sold by the same person that goes by firebirddude142 here on TGO. Although there are three in the auction, that $1,200 for each one! That's cool that they're complete kits, but that price is crazy to me. Almost makes me feel bad about passing on one kit for $400 a few years ago, but not really. I really don't see the ROI with a cold air kit for that price.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

I have an SLP cold air system myself but I’m not ready to part with it. It is still very restrictive, like the stock one. I purchased a cheap dual filter set from eBay that works really well for lots of air.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

To my knowledge, the only real benefit of modding an 86 305 TPI intake on a Pontiac would be the restrictive Pontiac airbox. The Camaro design was a little better. Even then, I just don't know really how much there is to gain on an otherwise stock engine. -assuming it's relatively stock.

MikeR1991, your set up will likely FLOW more air than stock, but it's also pulling from right above the fans, which might be the hottest air under the hood! Not really ideal. Looks pretty awesome though. Good Looking engine bay. I wouldn't mind seeing MORE of that car. .....you also look to be 90-92, wich does away with the MAF. In 86, the OP has a MAF to keep in the flow somewhere.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

Abubaca thanks for the comment. Yes it’s definitely pulling hot air from under the hood but I do have the vented hood bulge so that helps get some of the hot air out and like I said, I do have an SLP cold air box that I can put back on but it doesn’t help much either. I just tried this temporarily this summer. The best cold air is Hawks 4th gen fuctional ram air hoods for these 3rd gens but I guess they are on back order?

Here’s a few more pics, I have a pair of 91 “cousins” They are both 1LE’s. My camaro has only 721 original miles on it, still brand new! The camaro is 100% original & documented but the Formula is actually a “faux” 1LE. You could never tell the difference however, it has every 1LE option down to the corvette dual piston front brakes, aluminum drive shaft, and baffled fuel tank! It has no power options except for power locks and rear defroster.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

Yes it’s the custom leather beechwood, very rare. They only offered it for half the year from what I understand, then they switched it back to the tan color. The only two options the camaro has is leather & rear defroster.

Re: Col air intake "HELP"

They're both gorgeous. I've wondered about the beechwood/tan on the 91/92 cars. I had beechwood on my 89, and love the color, but not so much the lighter tan/neutral, and I've seen both on the later cars.

Re: Cold air intake "HELP"

really nice off topic car show that was all MAP cars. Very helpful. What happened to the OP? Dude wanted a CAI for a MAF car.? WTF? When the post is about a CAI. Glad I am retiring. This site has turned into brain mush. Moderator is dreaming about interior colors when the OP has a question about a CAI. Really awesome job keeping it on topic. So much for critical thinking.
