This is my first post on here, I am from the UK so some parts are not as easy to get hold of, picked up my GTA 305 convertible firebird which had been parked up for 23 years. I have been making headway but have now become stuck, the car had started and ran for 20 seconds a couple of times before it cut out and now it fires up but cuts out right away. what I have done so far is
New complete distributor
new leads and plugs
new fuel pump + tested fuel pressure
new injectors
New knock sensor
Vats bypassed
I have tested and the readings had come back ok on
o2 sensor
IAC valve
TPS sensor
Ground on engine
Maf and burn off relays
Im not sure about the MAF but have tried it plugged in and unplugged
I have tried my best to follow and check out the wiring were I can and all fuses and all looks ok can someone give me some ideas of were to go next

What year? I ask because the later models might have the VATS system, which could complicate the matter somewhat.

 

I guess when you replaced the distributor the ESC module was replaced? Any codes?

 

Hi thanks for the replies , I have bypassed the vats system and the engine cranks and injectors are working so I guess that's not an issue and yes the full distributor was replaced .
The latest were I am at is after being 100% sure on the distributor timing i was out by a tooth and unplugged the wrong bypass wire, so after doing this correctly she did fire up and had to keep the revs above 2000 or would cut out (so un able to finish setting the timing) It started not easy a couple of times were I kept trying to get this right but did throw out a couple of codes (42) guessing as I had the timing wire unplugged and (33) map sensor which I thought might need replacing (tried with this un plugged as well as plugged in)
I have been checking power to coil etc today and is all coming back ok so slowly getting there

 

How many miles are on it, timing chain starts getting slack after a while and age. Only really an issue above 200k though. Just wont hold time as well. Not a terrible job, there is a workaround so you dont have to pull the motor.

 

Check your TPS voltage -reading should be about .55 to about .65 at idle, give or take.

 

Hi she has 107000 mile and the distributor looked firm when turning the engine over back and forth with no play, and will check the voltage when the rain eventually stops, I also thought I would do a smoke test to make sure there are no air leaks within the intakes

 

Did you already test the CTS? That also can make starting and running issues.

 

Yep tested that and came within range

 

well found the issue i was having , an intermittent coil issue which i had tested and dismissed so now she runs and idles after being parked up for 23 years the MAF still need change as come up faulty but it was half sat in water for quite a few years thanks for those pointing me in the right direction
