1987 MAF QUESTION

Hey guys!!! I'm thinking I might have a bad maf, car runs fine but will occasionally throw a maf code. I have read so much about MAF sensors now till my head is about to explode. From what I'm understanding 87 was a change over year for MAFs?? The part number on mine is a Bosch 14094712 which im 99.9% is original. I went to Advance auto, Auto Zone, and oreillys and bought what they said was the correct MAF with those MAFs installed the car wont even start just cranks if it starts just stalls right back out. Which tells me Im not getting the right part. I'm assuming I have the early style MAF. Do I need to order a MAF for like an 85 or 86??? I'm kinda stumped at this point. Thanks in advance for all the help

Re: 1987 MAF QUESTION

85 is a one year only digital maf, 86-89 are analog. There are a few different part numbers for the 86-89 mafs 3 different ones i think but I’ve had good success recently with Delphis maf. Af10320.

Re: 1987 MAF QUESTION

Random code 36, changed and swapped some relays according to the flow chart, runs fine till it decides to do it again, restart the car and runs fine till pops up lol. Just so random. Ive check wiring as far as I can tell everything is perfect. Car is 60,000 all original, never messed with.

Re: 1987 MAF QUESTION

Could be an ecm not detecting the burn off . Some mafs made for tpi have no burn off wire. Not sure why a manufacturer would do that .

I have a Rich Porter MAF on my TPI. I bought it many years ago from Rock Auto. It does not have a hot wire in it. Instead, there is a circuit board with what looks like a small heat sink. I have never got a MAF error since installing it. Let me knock on some wood right now.

Really? I thought I read in these forums over the past years the delphi MAF’s were giving ppl issues. Was there a recent change in design or something with them?

the last 3 that I’ve had customers install work fine. What’s your suggestion?

I don’t have a suggestion. I replaced my original with a cardone rema 744712 and it worked fine for a bit, but might be giving me issues again. I need to check timing and compression first before thinking it might be the MAF again. So just knowing what MAF to go with should I need to replace it again is great to know
