MAF question 2016 To Replace or Not to Replace?
MAF questions...1987 IROC 5.7 TPI -surging idle with code 33. cleaned MAF with maf cleaner. Ran good for 30 minutes or so but back to surging.
Unplugged MAF and car runs fine.
QUESTION 1: Does this absolutely mean the MAF is bad?
QUESTION 2: If MAF is bad what is the best replacement?
I've read the forums for hours and hours and watched a lot of YouTube videos but want to make sure before I invest in a new MAF. (just bought the car in November so do not know very much about the history)

If you can afford it, buy a Rich Porter brand from O'Reileys. There is a lot of rebuilt junk out there. Look up Member RustyVango on here and type in MAF replacement.
If you can find a new Bosch, (good luck) get it.

Just curious...if it runs without the MAF plugged in what is the harm in leaving it unplugged? at least until I can get the new MAF, how long would it run?

Bad idea. You gonna throw everything off. It need to measure the air going to engine and so on and so on and so on. How long would it run? I haven't got a clue. Check this out.

Re: MAF question 2016 To Replace or Not to Replace?
I have a great Bosch MAF from my 87 ( I am original owner but this is not original Bosch unit that came with my car). It has been ported and the screens removed. I can send photos to verify and you can have it for $75 plus shipping ( I am in NC)all done through PayPal.
Thanks,
Carl

MAF sensor part number is "MA157
Spectra's Acquisition of Richporter Technologies, which extends Spectra Premium product line coverage into engine management parts in 2014. It might be a good one.

after the original maf sensor failed in 2013 I've been through two of the reman ones. they are absolute junk but are the only option to keep these cars running if you don't want to spend big money on a quality one

FOLLOW UP...picked up new MAF from O'Reilly's, $170.00 with old MAF trade in. New one has Bosch on the case. Installed and car ran great. I let it idle for 30 minutes with no problems. I'll take it out for a drive tomorrow. We got hit by a big storm last night and debris is everywhere.
Thanks everyone for the excellent advice and information!

I have heard some have had success buying a MAF for a 85 Corvette instead of the one for your specific car?
