Maxing out a TPI 305 using STOCK intake and heads

OK, so I'm 90% sure that I'm going to go the TPI route over the TBI route.

Here is the question then. Since I do not want to spend too much money on this and really do not want to go overboard with my daily driver, how can I max out my 305?

From what I understand, TPI and TBI heads are different in some respects. Even better for me! I can take my time taking off the heads off the old motor. Question is: do I stay with the stock valve size? Can I go with a 2.02 or is it not worth the $$ to do to stock heads. Would some bowl porting and 3 angle valve job be sufficient?

I know that there is enough articles out on the BB that go through porting the plenum, TB and intake. If I had to buy just one new, what would it be, if any?

Cam?
Again, not too crazy. Just want to max out the stock system.

I would like to end up with a 6spd and a 3.42 rear from a 4th or late 3rd gen with the good disc brakes, if that makes a difference on any of the above configs.

I have a good dynomax 3" exhaust and aftermarket cat. I AM LOOKING FOR SOME USED HEADERS!!

Other than that, all I want to do is put a msd 6a and a coil on it. No more. Oh, I know I need to have TPI Fuel Pump. Does my 90 have a baffeled tank? Isn't that standard on 90+ 3rd gen's? Hope so.

One more ? Are the short blocks of a TPI and TBI different in any aspect.

Lets see here...

Nope, you cant run 2.02/1.60's because of valve shrouding. 1.94/1.50 is the largest you can go with a 305. You definetly want tpi heads...the swirl port (tbi) heads are pretty bad. Definetly get a cam and custom chip made. You will still have to replace your computer with one from a tpi car. The only difference between the blocks should be the pistons. LB9's had flat-tops, L03's had dished. Im not sure if I would spend the money to swap a T56 into a thirdgen, but it would be cool. You could probably get high 13's with the T56 if the T5 LB9 guys run low 14's with mods so...

It'll be a project

Good luck

Thanks 85!

Are the dished pistons cast and the LB9's forged?? What is the compression loss with the dished ones???

I am willing to swap in a six speed over everything else!!! You know someone with one for sale or anybody that wants a 700 with low miles (or hight miles, I got two)

I got all the equipment to burn my own chips. The RTU's I program use the same ones as a matter of fact. Got tons of them laying around!

I was even thinking of just getting a DFI ECM. When you look at paying 500 just for a Diacom Diagnostic or similar, I'd spend the extra cash to get it. The prgramability of that thing is incredible. Plus I can go right to MAP and sell my MAF cheap. Then I can build a good airbox to run a ram air hood.

This car will be bad by summer!!
