'86 Vette Heads off 86 TPI Vette

I have a set of used '86 vette heads(casting number 462624) i just bought from a friend for $100. i am building a 355 tpi engine and was wondering if they would be any good with a set of domed pistons. i was planning on rebuilding them, new valves, springs, studs, etc.... should i keep these heads and rebuild them and have some minor machine work done to them or should i buy a new set for a few hundred. i am trying to save money here but heads are very important. i can rebuild them for 200-250 or should i spend 300-350 on a cheap, but new set????

well it depends, in 86 the corvette came with iron heads, with a switch to aluminum later during the year. but the 86 aluminum heads are NOT the good corvette d-port heads. those came in 88 i think. i belive the iron vette heads were 76cc and the aluminums were 58cc. i would run flat tops with the aluminums, and i would sell the iron heads to a metal scrap yard, they are useless to modify, the design isnt too great for flow, thats why they changed and thats why the fbody L98 heads were new designed 64cc heads.

if you can find a good set of heads for ~350, then thats what i would do. i wouldnt go with the iron vette heads. you might get average results with major port work and having them milled to 64cc

Re: '86 Vette Heads off 86 TPI Vette

Why are you loyal to your Thirdgen and is there a car you’d go out and get if someone offered you top dollar for your Thirdgen?

I am loyal to mine because it is a childhood dreaml. I was 8 when the GTA was released and was raised by a bunch of gearheads. My aunt dated a soldier how had a brand new black GTA with ttops. I knew then I would have one somehow one day. It took 30 years and me trading a 4x4 blazer that belonged to my deceased mother. Some people think I'm crazy for doing such a thing. All I can say is I lost her to suicide and driving the blazer flooded me with bad memories. My dream car was in the classifieds and I traded even. The blazer was way way nicer but I just couldn't hardly drive it. In a funny way my Mom gave me my dream car. Top top dollar won't buy my worn out GTA.

Here she is before I got her.

The only paint is on the hood, many many hours cutting with compound. Not a show car at all just a good driver.

Mom's blazer was rough, this was my first shot at a complete paint job. It's crazy but I never thought twice about trading. I just couldn't drive it without the thought of how I lost her crossing my mind.
