simple ?

i'm going to remove my tpi and replace it with a regular intake and carb. i'm going to leave it stock for now,so what i would like to know is,what do you recommend? i have a stock 350 out of a '90 camaro with about 70,000 miles on it and i'm going to put it in my'88 that has a knocking 305 in it. later on i'll be adding some go fast goodies but for now i'm going to stay stock.

Damn, I'm sure there's a simple question in there somewhere

Are you asking what carb/intake setup you should use? Or are you asking whether there may be any issues with swapping the 350 into the '88?

And why not just leave it as TPI?

IMO, it'd cost more to swap to carb, than it would to upgrade the TPI for a 350...figure 225 for new injectors and 40 bucks for a stock 350 EPROM, and the price of a new knock sensor (40-50 bucks?)

Going carb, 200 for the carb, 125 for the intake, another 150 for a distributor (all new prices), plus the time to yank all the wiring out of the way, and you won't pass emmmisions if you have a visual inspection.

But to answer your questions? There woudl be no issues with installing the 350.

Carb/intake setup..probably a 600-650 vacuum secondary carb, and Edelbrock RPM Performer, or similar, you'll also need to get a vacuum advance HEI distributor, GM unit would work fine, or look into aftermarket.

hi mike, well it did sound kind of funny. what i have is a tbi 305(knockin') and had a good friend give me a tpi 350. i've tried to find out what all is involved in keeping the tpi as i would really like to but i don't have a doner car to get all the parts needed for the swap. so it seems that going with the carb setup would be better(eaiser) for me. from what i've read, going from tbi to tpi is a real pain but i'd really like to keep the tpi setup,it just looks meaner.

I see, I'd just assumed the '88 was TPI...Okay, take a look at the Tech article at the main page. There's a TBI to TPI swap "how to", I've not read it, but many have pointed to it.

Do you have visual smog inspection? If so, you'll have to keep the TBI at the least, no use going carb'ed if ya have to yank it for inspection.

i've skipped over the tech article some and it sounds like more than i want to do. i'm lucky enough not to have smog inspection here in the south. so is there anyone else who wants to take a stab at what combo i could/should use on my stock setup. i just want to drive this thing....bought it about a month ago and hadn't had time to mess with it much.

My recommendation:

I know you said you were going to leave it stock, but don't. You will hit yourself in the head repeatedly with a blunt object later on if you do this. There is no better time to slide in a new cam (and/or a great many other things that I am sure you don't want to do) then when you have the engine out and the intake off.

So pick up a mild cam (such as one of the 268 grind Comp Cams) and some nice roller rockers.

Add a 650 Holley DP, a Performer RPM (maybe even the Air-Gap one if $$$$ permits), and add some SLP 1 3/4" headers and you will have a pretty decent setup. The stock L98 heads will be the only thing holding you back at that point.

Even with the addition of putting in a new cam and adding some roller rockers you really haven't created much more work for yourself and the gains will be substantial.

If money permits, substitute Hooker Super Comp long tubes and a Mufflex Y-pipe for the SLP headers, have the heads gone through or buy some aftermarket heads, go bigger on the cam - like maybe a 292 grind with oodles of lift, and substitute a Victor Jr. intake for the Performer RPM. At that point you will have a screamer.....

Well, there's some stuff to ponder for ya,
Good Luck!
Matt
