TPI and K1 Evo questions (mainly TPI)

Well, I have a bunch of questions. Most fo them deal with the TPI so I should start with that.

My friend said he bought a TPI two-port for like $250. I own a 84 Z28 and I was not sure if I could swap out the carbed parts for the TPI system. Now, I figure the TPI is just that, a fuel injection system. What eexactly does the TPI consist of? More so, what would I have to get rid of off of my old 350, and what would stay if I swapped for the TPI?I have not gotten a clear idea as to how difficult the swap would be. As well as what exactly is involved in the swap.

ANother thing I was wondering is what exactly would be the advantages / disadvantages of the TPI swap? I have heard better economy more power. Is this true or not? I heard the "new" engine would be easier to find upgrade parts. I really don't know so I put it to you guys for help.

OK, now for the Evo kits from K1. They have come out with the Evo II kits. Euroworks salesman I spoke with said they are getting shipment of the kits early to mid March. Now, there are still 2 kits not sold since m,id last week. This could mean one of two things. Either they are so popular they sell everything but these, or they are so nott in demand, tis hard ot sell the last two. I mean for 8g, you better have a good product. They are running a special now though. If they have those last 2 Evo II kits left to (pre?) order, you get a $500 rebate for putting down a deposit, and a $1,000 rebate if you pay for it up front full.

The interior I read in some other post is too flashy for me. It does look too much like a Ferrari which is probably a small reason why this gets confused for one so much. If I wanted a Ferrari, (and could fford one) I would buy one. I drive a Camaro therefor I want people to know its a American made car underneath all that flash.

Anyhow, any imput or advice / help would be greatly appreciated. Other then that, i hop everyone is doing fine. And if anyone here is from SW Ohio, drop me a line, later...frank

Oh boy, this might take a while

First off its not a TPI Two Port. TPI stands for Tuned Port Injection, thats probably what you confused with two port.

TPI is a fuel injection system. The main advantage of it will be increased milage and driveability. Better throttle response and not having to tune a carb are other advantages. You will not neccesarily gain more power with a TPI system. Truth be told a stock TPI intake isnt exactly the best intake to run if you want to make big horsepower. But if you want to keep the HP below 400hp the TPI will be good for ya. You can also upgrade the TPI system with a Superram plenum and runners, but thats a different post.

As for what it would take for you to put it on your car....well its gona take a bit. First off your gona need the physical intake, intake base, runners, plenum, and throttle body. Then on top of the big parts your gona need all the sensors, injectors, fuel rails, wireing, and the actual computer, called the ECM. Since you say you have a 350 in a 84 Z, I know that it is not the original engine. So then you have to figure out if you have pre-86 heads or the new style heads cause they have differnt intake bolt patterns and u will need the correct intake base for the engine. On top of all that, you are going to need to put a bung on the headers/exhaust manifolds to mount the O2 sensor in, depending on if you have a MAF or Speed Density setup you are going to have a MAF sensor and the intake tubing to hold it.

I know this sounds like a lot, especially if your not really mechanically inclined. Its really not all that difficult though. The easist way to do the swap would be to get a junker car with the whole TPI setup in it (most junkyards will have a few TPI 3rd gens sitting around, doesnt matter if its a 305 or 350 car, only diffence is the fuel injector size, you can buy new injectors if you use a 305 setup on ur 350) and then just transfer everything over from the donor car to yours. That way you have everything available to you and you can see how it all fits in before you start to move everything over to your car.

That should just about cover the basics of the swap. As for the EVO kits I dont know that much about them but I have never heard anything bad. Take that for what its worth. Good luck man.
