You will have to change the gear on the distributor to the bronze one if the cam is earlier than 1985.

Ok, in design or make? It is a comp cams 292H. Purchased in 2000.

The type number "292H" and purchase date are not important. The 292H is a Street/Strip fairly radical cam that can be built for almost any year model vehicle. You need to find out what year and engine the cam was ordered/purchased for. This will determine which distributor gear is needed. You can call the Comp Cams hotline at 800-999-0853 or visit there webb site at; www.compcams.com They are very user friendly and helpful. Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but based on the info at hand, that's the best I can do.

You can use a distributor which has an IRON gear with most flat tappet cams, and even GM's TPI roller cams, as they are induction hardened and not billet steel.

A cam that is billet steel requires a bronze gear.

The newer iron gears GM made were for the different size distribut shaft. In the late 90's there was a close tolerance gear, and it was replaced with a harder verion for the vortec engines with high volume pumps.

So, yes you can use a 1990 dist. with an older, non-billet steel cam.

Mark.
