Fuel pump replacment anyone? 86 Camaro TPI
I sure some of you have run into this. I'm going to start with the fuel filter, then go the fuel pump relay(not sure where its hidden) and work from there. I do know my pump would prime quickly, now it seems to lag. Possible loose electrical connection? Suggestions?
The pump is in the tank. Given the age of your car I bet it is going out. I don't know what your mods are but you may want to consider an upgarade to a Walbro pump (I used a 255lph pump this may be overkill if you have a 305) they are cheaper that stock and are very good. It is a pain in the butt to drop the tank to replace the pump but I have heasrd of some cutting a door in the trunk get to it and then sealing it back (maybe someone on the board that has done it could help you).

O.K. I spent a couple days on this once, first I replaced the fuel filter, nope, then I ripped apart my rear end to drop the tank and replace the pump and in tank filter, still nothing. There also is a fuel pump relay mounted to your fire wall on the engine/driver side. There might be a couple you will have to find out which one is for the pump, sorry cant remember. I replacd that, negative, Then I found out that by my Battery is a little, single wire that has a in line fuse...Yup fuse was blown. Two full days, alot of corona and about 150 or so on replacing good parts and it was a ten cent fuse that took 30 sec to replace, Oh well at least I know everything else is good.

Definitely check that fuse near the battery. Most people don't know about that fuse and go through alot of work just to find out about that fuse later.

pump replacement
If replacing the pump is what needs to be done, its not that difficult, but having power tools is what made mine pretty easy
I first took off the covers that were surrounding it, no big deal. There are two, a big one that attaches partly to the stability bars, and a little one over the right wheel well. Then i had the remove the stability bars (heres where the power tools can in handy) started with the one on top, took the 3 bolts out, and then the single one on the other end. Then the second one: the single one one the right, and then i just pushed it down, out of the way (oh yea i also had a lift, which also helped alot)
Then came the gas cap, and housing, no big deal, but make sure u dont forget
...Take off the straps, they bolted on the front (towards the front of the car) and then after turning them, they fell out the back.
Turn the tank verticle, and just wiggle and shift towards the right until it comes down. I had a second person, and the tank was pretty much empty, so i had it real easy.
Oh yea, make sure u disconnect the hoses from the tank! First!
after getting the tank out, the rest was pretty simple, just take off the safty lock, and pull out the assemlby, pop the old off, pop the new on. i also replaced the strainer at the same time.
Reverse to put back, and when we put the gas cap housing back on, the arm was bend, so i jsut reached down and bent it back. i guess it got bent in the wiggleing and shifting during removal.
I just did this to mine last week, so if u have any questions, its all still fresh in my mind, so just pm me...
hope this helps

Hey could one of you guys please tell me exactly where that fuse wire is located and/or what it looks like. My pump is 1 year old and is not working. Thinking electrical and just trying to rule out everything before I drop the tank.
Thanks!
