how much $ is this worth?

i am going to sell my 305 tpi engine. its an '87 305 out of my trans am. its still in the car, but will be removed when someone buys it. it will be just the engine with no tpi intake system. heads and internal parts included with exhaust manifolds. it has nothing wrong with it and only 49k miles on it. how much should i sell it for? i've seen these motors go for 1500 on ebay but thats with a tpi system with it but i dont want that much at all. how much is it worth? thanks guys!

Dont mean to burst your bubble here, but the 305's usually dont go for much. Why by a 305 when I can have a 350 for the same price. Right? 500 maybe, but I'm just guessing. I really dont know.

well if you're rebuilding your 305 i'm saying its cheaper to buy this engine or whatever. i only want around 500 for it, you cant find any 350 ready to go for that price with only 49k miles.

I wouldn't pay more than $100 for a 305 unless it was something special. Leave the TPI with it and I'll throw in a few hundred $$ more. Sorry.

well think about it, if you have a blown 305 and you're looking to rebuild, this is a lot cheaper than spending all the money for new parts and machine work and so on. all you have to do is drop this motor in place. no work needed ot be done or nothing, just buy it and drop it in. i've seen 305's with the tpi system go for $1100 on ebay and without it its def. worth around $500 i'd say. it's not that bad of a motor, look how many fbodies there are with 305's.

Looks like a clean low mi engine. I paid $500 for a 110k - 120k 305 ci. w/TPI last year. I thought it was a fair deal. Maybe I got the shaft..........it is a personal opinion. I know where I live, a junkyard would get about $800 for it. I recommend you look at car-part.com and ebay for a more accurate estimate. I wouldn't ask boards like this these questions cause most people think everything is worth 10 bucks. But hey, what do I know?

I woudn't expect a whole lot but 5-800, maybe even 1k isn't out of the question. junk is right, asking on the board isn't going to do you much good. You don't have a very big stage to try to sell this engine on, a 305 longblock is not the most desireable thing in the world, thus you'll more than likely just be selling it locally to someone who has some use for it. Whether that be as a replacement for a 305 in something that blew, or just somebody looking for a basic cheap V8 to do an S10 swap or a V6 swap or something. Advertise locally and at your local speed shop, etc. $800 is a high fair number to start from, you can always bargain down from there.
It's also not an all bad idea to keep the engine in the car like you are. At least the potential buyer can see / hear / drive it to know it's in good shape, doesn't smoke, etc. Once the negine is laying in a corner of teh garage it's value goes down by that much in confidence of the buyer.

hey thanks a lot for the advice, i think i'm just going to sell it on ebay if the current offer doesnt stand with this one guy i'm talking to he offered me $700 but until i have the money its for sale, but i am keeping it in the car until someone buys it. i want to drive it a few more times for the hell of it and then rip it out when it's sold. thanks!

TPI 305s never go for over $450-$500 on Ebay, and that's only if you're real lucky and find a local buyer to bid on it. Ever ship a complete motor? It's not something that people are willing to do. I just saw a TPI 305 go for about $350 on Ebay. I could have resold the TPI for a profit and sold the rest of the motor for scrap. You know why I didn't? For the same reason that nobody else did... shipping costs and hassles. The only reason that they're worth anything is because people want the TPI for hot rod swaps.

Yes, buying yours is cheaper than rebuilding a blown 305, but when you can buy a used 350 for the same damned price, nobody with any marbles is going to buy the 305. Used 350s are a dime a dozen and cheap, and it stands to reason that a 305 will always be worth a lot less than a 350 no matter what the intended usage is.

I saw several 305 motors at the All Chevy Show in West Palm Beach swap meet for $100. I think I sold my complete, 305 TBI to a guy for $250.
