smell like gas

hey guys, I have a 88 Iroc Z convertible with a 305 LB9 TPI / T5 tranny. The car runs great but occasionally smokes on start up. I would believe the valve seals are bad but it smells like gas not oil.And I don't have any issuses with oil loss. It happens worse when I drive the car a while then let it set for about a half an hour. It becomes harder to start and sometimes requires a little pedal. But when I help it it smokes worse and smells more. In the mornings it fires up quickly with no help but again occasionally a little smoke. I'm new to the TPI setup and thought this may be something somebody's already dealt with? Thanks Jason

You need valve seals and you probably have leaky injectors. Unless your rings are shot from the leaky injector washing down the cylinders.

I vote for leaking injectors.

Smell the oil. If it smells like gas, change it. Gas in the oil will kill
bearings like pronto.

FIrst off, replace the valve seals. I use Ford umbrella seals, pull
the old ones off and push the new ones down to the guides and
they will adjust themselves when the motor first starts.

When you pull the plugs to do the seals see if one of them smells
like gas or is darker than the rest from running rich. If you find a
dark one, that may be where a bad injector is.

But do the seals first and get that out of the way.
