Vortech heads drilled

I know when you change to Vortech heads you are supposed to buy a new manifold designed for them. One of my buddies told me that on carburated applications you can just drill the heads to make them work with the old style manifolds. Will this work with TPI? If not why? Thanks, and sorry if it is a dumb question, I did a search and couldn't find anything.

I rememeber a couple people trying it a while back. I believe the issue was the ports don't line up very well, the vortec is a taller / higher port. Carbs would face the same problem, but there are some differences. First, i'd say most carb intakes would have plenty of meat to do some port matching with. Second, the biggest problem with the TPI base is that the ports are already too low. So even if you opened up the roof up it wouldn't ever flow right.

Yep, there isn't enough meat on a TPI intake to drill it for the vortec bolt holes, or to match the ports. It is also a bad plan to drill the heads for a standard intake beacuse of the thinner walls, good chance of ruining the head.
