How do you tell if an Adj FPR is malfunctioning?

I have my old Accell back in the car after the adj bolt snapped off in my Crane!
At idle I can get the pressure to hold at about 35psi. Any more and the needle starts to rapidly vibrate between 40 and 55 psi. So fast it's almost a blur.
Driving is okay up to 35-40mph. Above that I get +5deg timing retard, knock counts go up and my injector PW climbs. It's like the computer is trying to compensate for a lack of fuel.
Is this the symptom of a weak FPR or a dying fuel pump. I have had no other problem with the pump, car starts hot, cold, no matter.
Also does the hole the adj bolt goes down need to be air tight? When I drilled and retapped my crane the bolt is a little wobbly in the threads. Will this induce a vacuum leak in the unit?

WHo has the cheapest price on the holley AdjFPR?

I asked a mechanic and he said that the regulator needs to be airtight, something about maintaining the pressure. A quick fix for now would pry be some teflon tape on that bolt, but get it fixed soon! A molotov under the hood (a bad idea!!!)
