Stuck EGR valve causing bad idle and bad MPG???
I've been getting the EGR code lately and constant SES when driving sometimes. It also idles horribly (race cam) and then looses power when doing this. I'm thinking that the EGR diaphram is getting stuck sometimes causing this. If I floor it all the way thru 1st gear it usually clears up. Any thoughts?? Should i buy a new one or just take it off? How much do they costs? Thanks
* Oh yeah, its had a recent tuneup and I've checked almost everything else. Nothing else is bad that I know of... like the little stuff (wires, plugs, ignition module, cap/rotor, MSD box, AFPR, fuel pump, and o2 sensor)

if teh egr valve is hung open it is letting too much inert exhaust gas into the intake. causing the terrible idle quality you describe. it may also affect your MPG also. you can put a vaccum tester to the vaccum line goin to the EGR valve, draw vaccum thru the line and the diaphram should raise up, when you release the vaccum from the line the diapahram should go back down. it is common for EGR valves to get dirty and plugged and hang open. the only way to replace and or clean teh EGR and its passages is to remove the intake plenum. this is not a huge ordeal, but it does need to be taken into consideration.

re:
Thanks man. Thats what I was thinking. Its also hard to start lately... probably flooded with exhaust fumes. Well, guess I need to replace it or take it off
Thanks again!

no problem. if i were you tho, i would keep it on there. it doesnt hurt you at wide open throttle anyway and it lowers combustion temps for lower emissions, and allows for more ignition timing and better mileage

EGR valves are about $50 at the local Kragen. As stated earlier, it might just be stuck open from being dirty. If the diaphram is still intact you can just clean all the carbon crap out of it and it'll be fine.

re
Thanks. I think its getting stuck SOMETIMES. Not stuck all the time. Is it worn out or just needing cleaningl? Not sure what you're saying. Thanks!
