Are there any side effects to swapping auto to 5 speed?

I have an 87 GTA 5.7 Auto. Im thinking of swapping to 5 speed. Are there any problems with this swop such as speedo errors, codes, and emission problems that would effect an emission test?.

Thanks

the speedo will be fine for you just get a firebird 5-speed or a later camaro one I don't know what years but, 88-92 firebird t-5s will work fine. my trans speedo pluged right in. the back up lights I had to run from the connector in side the car to the trans. the clutch pluged in to the harness tucked behind the kick panel. I have not had a code for it ever.

t-5

becareful the reason no 5.7's came w / t-5's from the factory is they couldn't handle the power. if your going to go w/ manual the t-56 6 speed will be a much better choice

BUT The T5 is a lot cheaper. In the long run though, BREAKING one might not be. I've heard they last a while but always go eventually. I wanna put a t5 in mine but, I'm not quite making the torque of a TPI 5.7 either.

too weak

you say that you will eventually have a new motor. i'm sure that new motor won't be making less power than you have now. the t56 will allow you to upgrade. so in the long run it would actually save you money. not to mention a t56 in a 3rd gen will automatically give you cool points.

If you want to put a T5 in your car, get a TRemec TKO replacment. They're rated to 500+lbs of tq. Have fun trying to break that tranny. I'm thinking of either getting a TKO or an aftermarket tremec T56 (both cost about 2K) when my 700r4 bites the dust. If you value your time, do it once and do it right.
