4th gen rear end

Hey guys Im not much of a rear end guy but i figure this is the place to ask. Anyway my buddy is swapping out his 99 trans am gear which i think is a 3.23 but not sure. He is replacing it with a 3.73. Im not real sure about the sizes but he wants to go bigger. The car is stock besides 3in pipes. now in my idea this would hurt his e.t wouldnt it? I try to tell him that but he tells me the newer trans am have them and they have the same hp(hes dumber than i am with cars). So guys gimme some info to settle this argument right or wrong.
