700r What do YOU think happened?
700r What do YOU think happened?
Hey guys. Had the 700r rebuilt with a 'vette servo installed. This being the first time I had a trans. rebuilt I didn't realize how much fluid it holds following a complete rebuild. I looked up the fluid capacity in my Haynes manual and it said capacity was 4.7 qts. I put in 4.5 qts. and the car would not move. I shut it off and called Pro-Built. He informed me that I needed to put at least 4 more qts. in and then check the dipstick. Also I had asked the rebuilder of the 700r if I needed to pour fluid in the converter before installing it and he said that it wasn't required. Pro-built said you should but of course it was now too late. After filling the trans. I tried it again and now it drove and shifted ok. After driving around awhile I stomped on it from a dead start. It burned out nice, shifted into second strong and when it shifted into third it started slipping badly and I barely made it home. I know, flame on me about jumping on it so soon but I am hard on my cars. Always. I would rather find out now than some night in the middle of nowhere. There is a slight smell to the fluid. I don't think the tv cable is adjusted right. Also does the top cooler line on the trans. go to the top fitting on the radiator? Any guesses? Thanks for being here for guys like me.

The capacity quoted by Haynes is for changing the oil in the sump when you do an oil and filter change. The same amount is still held in the tranny.
If you look in Haynes page 193 it shows the top pipe from the tranny going to the top of the radiator.
*TV cable adjustment and correct oil level is critical.*
Putting a quart of oil in the TC would have lubricated it for that split second before the pump filled it but I'd think it would be more advisable than critical.
The smell of fluid maybe due to oil spilt on tranny or engine or possibly leaking from the dipstick tube where it enters the tranny.
The correct way to fill would have been to put about 9 quarts in and start the engine. Engage drive for a few seconds then put it in park and with the engine still running add oil to the cold fill mark on the dipstick. Then go for a drive, get the fluid hot and check the oil is at the correct level.
Hope you get it sorted otherwise your *** deserves a good thrashing.

Sorry Jay 727. I didn't mean to make a mistake. I guess when you have never made a mistake you can make a comment like that. :hail:Hey Simon thanks for the info.
