85 z28 5 speed
i am gonna buy a 85 z28 5 speed (i hope it's a z lol) anyway this will be my fisrt 5 speed so i don't know much about the transmissions like what came in them and how good are they. also what rears came in the 85 z 5 speed because i have an 85 z with 3:73's it had 3:08's in them and it's a 2 series carrier so i wanna know if the 3:73 will fit in the 5 speed.
thanks

According to the tech data, an '85 Z28 LG4 5-speed would have 3.23 gears, so 2-series gears would not fit that carrier.
Why not just change out the entire rear assembly?

You can get a posi carrier that will fit both your 2-series gears and 26-spline axles. About $300-$350 plus installation labor, perhaps install kit (another $100 or so).
What's wrong with the carrier? A PowerTrax unit will install in a non-posi carrier and eliminate the spider gears. It's also about $325, but the nice part is you can install it yourself without any special tools. Of course, if the spider gears wiped out the carrier, that won't help you any.
Oh, your 5-speed question: They can't handle a bunch of abuse, but guys that take care of them and know how to shift are running 13's in their cars with them. That's respectable.

The carrier is basically a hunk of metal the holds the ring gear, spider gears, and is supported itself in the housing by roller bearings. About all that could go wrong with it is excessive wear on the surfaces on which the spider gears run. Or, less likely, where the bearings are supported.
