Can I get Rid of TV cable????
Can I get Rid of TV cable????
I have a 700r4 out of a 92 camaro that I am going to put behind a non computer controlled (carbed) 355. I will be using a Ratchet shifter and intend to shift myself when I want to pass someone or I am at the drags.
Can I just block of the hole for the TV cable and leave it out???
What does the TV cable actually do??
Thanks

Unlike the TH350 and 400 that uses vaccum to shift the tranny the 700R4 uses line pressure to shift. The TV cable controls the line pressure by opening a valve. In short, you need the TV cable for the tranny to shift.

Look at it this way, without the cable how can the tranny 'know' when you mash the throttle and want to go fast--shifting at the redline. Or light throttle around town shifting at low rpms. It needs to know the throttle position to work.
I understand that if all you want to do is press on the gas pedal and let the transmission shift for you that you must use the TV cable
But would there be any problem with starting with the car in first gear and manually shifting into second, third and forth.
Sort of like driving a standard without having to use the clutch pedal.

If you were to leave it out the trans would "think" the engine was at idle & would not increase the line pressure which is needed for shifts at higher rpms. Low line presure @ high rpm = toasted trans. So the answer is you need it.

Thanks RickTpi!
I get it now I will install the TV cable with the trany.
I have another question though. This transmission has a lock up torque converter and an electrical plug 4 openings with 3 pins in it. do I need to do anything with this as this is a totally non computer car.

If you want the converter to still lock up you will need to get a lock up switch from painless wiring (part# PRF-60109) that uses vaccum to activate the lockup solenoid.

You will need a kit to lock up the converter. Painless & B&M make them as well as others. If you let it go you can overheat the trans & shorten its life.
