Your "76" should be a 8.5" 10 bolt.

In stock trim, the 7.5" 10 bolt can be broken with a stock engine. It depends on how much shock load is put into it.

I built one up last year. 4.10 gears, LPW solid rear cover with bearing supports, welded axle tubes, aftermarket 28 spline axles, solid crush sleeve. I ran mid to low 11's with it with no problems.

I went to a 9" over the winter because I went to a very high stall converter and a transbrake and didn't feel the tiny 7.5" gear set could take the abuse of that.

I hear you, but my car is not stock, almost a sleeper if you want to say, it looks slow but it's fast. I understand what your saying, any rear end can be broken with enough HP.

No, what he is saying is your 76 has a different rear end. It has a 8.5" 10 bolt while the thirdgens have a 7.5". Those numbers refer to the diameter of the ring gear.

Thanks for the info. This past weekend I blew out my 10-bolt rear end. It held up for about a year of abuse, I am running high 11s. This car is also my daily driver, so I think I will get a 12-bolt rear.

Were are some good places to get a 12-bolt besides thunderracing.com.

Also, I was curious what is the ring gear size in a 12 bolt?
