Is there any disadvantage in running an automatic over a manual in the 1/4 mile? Do they make a trans brake for the 700r4? If they do is it very streetable or will it rip my tranny apart? I know the automatic weighs more but is there alot of power loss? What does a tq converter do and how does a higher stall help?

manual will be faster.....period.
auto with convertor won't be too far behind.
I had this debate and went with the auto 'cuz it was cheaper.
Now I wish I had gone manual.
First gear is worthless....second, then third, then 1/4 mile lights.
I am only basically using two gears.
Of course this is loose convertor with 3.70 gears.
If you are running lower than 3.70, you will use even less of your gears.

stick will be quicker, auto will be more consistent, if your a bracket racer an auto is a better choice

i have been racing for quite some time now, and my grandpa has raced for thirty years and my uncle for 20...and we all agree that if the car has alot of horses, auto is def the choice, or if you bracket race, auto is the choice...on anything 400 hp and down (roughly) id say that manual is good...even tho i havnt noticed THAT much of a difference in times...
yea im going to be running about 500hp with 150 shot of nos so a t56 wont handle it. I heard the 700r4 first gear is way to low though

the 700r4 has an excellent first gear ratio, specially for a heavy car like a 3rd gen, it is 3.06
the problem with the 700 is that it goes from 1st of 3.06 to 2nd of 1.52, resulting in a large RPM drop.
If you put the exact same motor with the exact same rear end with the exact same weight in a car with a t-350(2:52,1:52,1:0) to a 700r4(3:06, 1:52, 1:0, .70, the 700 will win.

im going to be running my trans cooler lines through a 4 core aluminum radiator will that make it run hot since its not an external cooler? Do they make trans brake for 700r4? How do i install the 700r4 in my car was running a t5 with a carburator no computer? Thanks for all the info every one

here we go with this debate again lol
it depends on the overall power and the engine setup you have.

a t56 will handle it, look at the t56 in the twin turbo lingenfelter vette, 700hp
a 700r4 with a 500hp engine and a 150 shot wont last long, if you want auto get a turbo 400, but i'd still stick with the 6 spd, it'll be fine.

The t56 is only good up to 450 lbs of tq though? I could be pushing about 550hp and wont the 150 shot blow the t56?

the 450 rating is relative. It means the tranny can take a 450 ft-lbs shock in first gear with perfect traction, no tire slip.
There are alot of 4th gens and c5 corvettes with big power numbers over 500 and the trannies are fine, the problem is finding a clutch that can handle the power.
The zf6 in c4 corvettes is rated at 400ftlbs and theres a number of twin turbo cars putting out over 1000hp running them.
