Intermittent tranny shift problem

Gentlemen, hopefully one of you can help me.
My 82 Camaro with stock 305 carb and 3 speed Auto. tranny is giving me some worries. Last summer I noticed the revs went up but the car didn't shift to into 2nd in normal cruising mode one time. I pulled over, checked the fluids, got gas and resumed my trip. Car shifted fine after. I added some tranny fluid later as it had looked down a bit. Never had a similar situation.
Fast forward to May 2002. Took the car out of storage, drove it home fine. Couple of drives later , same problem. Twice! First time after exiting hiway , second during city driving. Last weekend took a trip to Niagara Falls and had no re-occurance? My mechanic quickly checked the tranny fluid level the second time (I was driving by) and said its right up there, no burning smell either. My other GM mechanic buddy told me on the phone , the tranny's on the way out! My own experience with "exiting" trannies is they get worse every day until gone.
I'm thinking about getting a full tranny fluid/filter change. Maybe some dirt clogging up the arteries inside? Maybe see something when I open her up??
Car's got 66000mi, all original , I drive about 2K/year, no tranny service ever. Sits in a dry & heated garage in winter with occasional start up and a drive or 2. Some leaking occures every winter, but I expect that at her age.
Any ideas? Sorry for the long story..
Ron

Sounds like one of the valves in the valve body is sticking.
Could also be the govenor sticking.
