What a T-5 NWC will Take.
I have been here a while and have read a lot about transmissions, what they will hold, what breaks, and why. I have an 86 IROC with an 84 T-5 tranny with 200,000 on it, from a junk yard for $300. That is when I switched from a 700R4 to a manual. Since then I have put 30,000 on it and have finally built a motor that I like. It is a 409 with all of the typical parts. Flat-top 10.5 to 1 comp. Speed Pro pistons, 5.7 SIR rods, 220cc flowed Pro Action Heads, 305H cam w/.525 lift, and 1.6 roller steel rockers, 850 dbl. pump Holley and a big intake. My tranny works great!!!! I don't have any cheater slicks or 11 inch wide tires on it, just 255/50s in a good sticky compound from Bridgestone. Haven't dynoed yet, but i am sure it is 450+hp and 400+ft.lbs. I just want to say, don't spend thousands of bucks if you don't have to. WHEN mine goes away, THEN I will find something else, maybe a WC T-5, but why spend it now? Build your motor, put a supercharger on it, whatever. Just drive it, You'll be surprised.
Forgot to say that the motor and tranny combo in it now has 15,000 on it, add those up and wow!
P.S. I also have an 84 Lingenfelter Z-28 with a 377 small block that was an IROC test car in 84. It is dynoed at 425 hp and 376 ft.lbs. at the wheels, and guess what tranny it has in it? Long live the T-5!!!
