tranny fluid change help

hi
i have a v6 with stock 700r4
my dad broke the news to me that he haddnt changed the tranny fluid in 5 or 6....YEARS...yes YEARS.
i wanna change the tranny fluid...its an automatic tranny, i was wondering the following:
what is the exact procidure for changing the tranny fluid?

is it smart to change the fluid? i have heard some trannys might seize up.

what is the best fluid to buy? why?

filter? what kind do i buy? whats best?

my tranny is still shifting smooth, but i would like to change the fluid...

thanks alot guys

mike

just drop the pan and the fluid goes everywhere. if you plan on doing this again put a drain plug in the pan. i always bought my filters at the local parts store, not any of the discounters. for fluid i'd run mobil 1 or amsoil. make sure you getthe old o ring out of the valve body when you change the filter. i always tap the new filter in place with a soft hammer.

you don't get all of it out, you don't even get half of it out. there are machines the connect to the cooler lines to drain and fill and you can unhook the preasure line and pour new fluid in the fill neck while the engine is running. i never have ,all i change is what's in the pan.

reason why i ask is because i recently bought a 1992 305 tbi camaro ..when i test drove it the tranny felt tight.. so a month goes by and it starts to **** the bed 2nd and 3rd begins to shudder and and it starts to slip slightly and hard shifts so i decide to change the tranny fluid and change the filter i notice right away that the fluid is darker then it should be and it has a burnt smell i also notice that the parts internly look tarnished and there are little shiney fragment dust in the filter so i change it and put it all back together and add 5 quarts of sinthetic tranny fluid and perceeded with the test drive.. drove better then it did when i first bought it but 2 weeks go by and the problem comes back.. so that brings me to the question that you answered ..but by changing all fluid in the system and flushing it the way you describe do you think that would cure my problem or should i just save my money for a rebuild?

as a rule if the fluid smells or looks burnt you have problems with the clutches and good change the small particles might of trashed the valve body too. you might want to check the tv cable and make sure it's adjusted right.

the labor on a rebuild isn't that bad if you do the R&R. last trans i bought came from gm and the R&R labor was only 400 so i let them put it in, plus there shouldn't be any problems with warrenty that way. lot of shops charge in the 1300 to 1700 dollar range for rebuild and R&R. if you catch the problem early you'll save the valve body, if i recall correctly a rebuilt valve body would of cost me over 500 dollars and the rebuilt trans was only 1300 or so.
