so you got me curious
your running gear lube in your WC-T5 without any problems at all??? what year WC?
mine is an 89, I'm the origingal owner and the T5 was actually replaced in 1990 with just 6000 miles on it because of a 5th gear whine.
now the car has 64,000 miles and I'm thinking of changing the fluid cause I romp on it pretty good. race course events and auto-cross. so I'm thinking 12 yo fluid is time to go.
actually in 1990 when the dealer replaced my T5 under warrenty. borg warner wouldn't let the dealer open the unit to replace 5th gear, they made them replace the entire tranny.

The trans came out of a 91... it doesn't matter what year it is, they're all the same inside, either they're a 1st design or they're a 2nd design aka "WC".
I rebuilt mine when I got it, the previous owner had used Red Line MTL (synthetic gear lube) and everything inside was perfect, just needed freshening up, I use 50% Mobil1 ATF and 50% Mobil1 gear lube in it. It is getting around to needing freshening again, I guess having a strong-running 400 in front of it has taken its toll.
There would be no problems with using the updated ATF. Obviously they didn't look into their crystal ball in 89 and write "Dexron II only, until Dexron III comes out", it's a little like motor oil that way. The newer lube takes the place of the older.
You're right, GM (and most other car mfrs for that matter) will usually warranty the entire unit under circumstances like that rather than letting the dealerships repair something like that under warranty, it's actually cheaper that way most of the time, and there's fewer comebacks. B-W had nothing to do with it.

running any type of motor oil or gear lube in w/c t-5 will attack the adhesive that holds the clutch disk lining on the blocking ring. it also has tight tolerances for use with the ATF so gear lube is too thick to get in between the gears and bearings...you shold change to only ATF...just a suggestion
