Simple shifting question

I just bought a beautiful red 1987 GTA TA 5.7 350, with only 34000 miles on it, this is my second day with it, the car is stock, for now...

Anyways, stupid question, but its just something i need to know for sure. Well u know how they have the D drive with the circle around it, which is overdrive gear. And then there is just the regular D. Basically, which one is best for racing, since i've heard overdrive is not that good for racing to begin with.

And i've heard about just using the 1-2 shifts instead of D, to upshift, but i dont wanna do any abuse to the car like that.

Thanks.

Oh ok, cause i always have it on overdrive, u know to someone who aint a mechanic wizard, the word "overdrive", sounds cool!.. But ok, thanks for the info, its staying on regular D now. Unless like u said i hit the highway, or just cruising.
