What will happen if I give it too much lin pressure on a 700r4?

Question, if I adjust my TV cable so that it provides more line pressure thus holding the gear longer, will it cause any damage to my tranny? And what about if I have too little of pressure? Will that cause me to burn up my clutches?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Too much line pressure will make it shift very hard and very late.

Too little line pressure will make it shift too early and too slowly; since clutches only wear during the act of shifting, the more quickly it shifts, the longer they'll last. You can definitely fry a 700 in a hurry with an improperly adjusted TV cable that way.

Thanks for the reply. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this..

I always thought though that if you dont have enough line pressure that your clutches are slipping more thus generating more heat and wear? This is why I adjusted my TV cable so it holds the gear a little bit longer than its original factory setting. So the clutches on engage for shifting then release?

Thanks again for any replies.

Increasing Line Pressure is often a good start on a stock Tranny however while your method will work to a degree, once you hit WOT it will reset itself. Do this:
To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.
Now anything more than that will require recalibration of the Tranny. My recommendation would be either the TransGo Shift Kit (fixes and improves tranny) or Reprogramming Kit (same but adds HP/HD features).

When the trans shifts, the clutches or bands simply apply, and stay applied. They don't drop back off. In some transmissions, during a shift one clutch engages and another lets go; I don't know for sure about 700s specifically.

Thanks again for the replies.

I tried the adjustment that trasnfixleo mentions, but when I hit WOT the cable housing doesnt rachet forward. Meaning that if the cable housing is all the way towards the firewall and I hit WOT it doesnt move. If I leave it this way, I have way too much line pressure. I dont think my TV bracket is bent either or out of alignment. So I ended up having to give it less line pressure by moving the cable housing towards the front a few clicks.

About the clutches, isnt the applied pressure that keeps them from slipping set by the line pressure(or TV cable)? Not sure.. thanks.

If you followed my method it WON'T click forward. It will just be set at WOT, in sync. Sounds like you may be trying to mix the two methods. 99% of the ones I've done this on had the Throttle Plate slightly under full at WOT requiring a slight bend of the bracket before continuing on to the TV adjustment. Line pressure varies as the Throttle Valve moves. This is the operating pressure that holds the Clutches and Band on.

Thanks Leo, appreciate your feedback always.

Weird thing is like I mentioned, if I set it per your instructions it shifts way too late. It'll hold first gear at light throttle until past 25 mph or so. My only way of fixing it was to mix the two methods like you mention.

Question, if I dont have enough line pressure the clutches and band can slip causing more heat and potentially burn them up?

Sounds like its better to have more pressure then less.. stil not sure. Thanks for any replies.

Is the Tranny original? Is the TV Geometry correct? If so it should not shift late with those instructions and lowering the TV to get earlier shifts will lower line pressure which can have adverse affects on the clutches and band. If it is all original and it shifts late there may be a problem, perhaps in the governor.
