B&M Megashifter

Would the B&M megashifter fit in my car's console? I was looking at part #130-80692. How hard is it to install these? Anyone have one that can give me their opinion? Jegs recommends some kind of installation kit but I heard you don't really need it. Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can give.

yeah, It should fit. Order the one out of summit. it is cheaper and they have the 3rd gen specific megashifter.

I installed it in a day, but I made sure to get the throw for the shifter lever (on the trans) exactly right. If the throw is off, then you could think you were in reverse, and you were in the middle or neutral and drive.

The throw is very important. You have to do cutting no matter what shifter you buy, but the megashifter is a great buy and for me it has definately earned its keep.

Check your reverse lights often though. The switch on mine is funky. Some times the shifter will turn the reverse lights on while I am driving or not at all. You just have to do adjustments untill it is just right.

You will understand what I am talking about when you buy the shifter.

So it should fit in my car? I heard that it wouldn't fit in my car. I just want to make sure before I go and buy it if it is going to work or not.

I just installed one in my car. I don't know what your mechanical skills are, but I fix cars for a living and I found the installation to be fairly simple. The wiring kinda sucked, and the cutting of the stock shifter trim is pretty easily done with a die grinder and cut off wheel. TunedportZ, you can adjust the reverse light switch by either loosening the 1/4 nut and bolt and pushing switch contact away from the dimple in shifter. If you need more adjustment you can loosen the switches up and bend the tab on switch out a little bit.

Well since it can be made to fit I might as well try. What exactly Foney did you have to do to make it fit well? As for my experience I am a novice at car mechanics. Picking up a lot on fixing the car just not quite an expert yet

I cut the hole for the shifter much smaller than it needed to be. Then I slowly cut a little bigger untill it was just perfect.

There is a pattern that is included and the instructions should be really good at telling you how to install it. I didn't even read the instructions, I just opened it up and read any warnings, then I figured it out myself. (it is more fun doing it with out instructions, as far as I'm concerened)

Make sure that you armorall the shifter boot, because I didn't and I have had it completely crack up on me in only six months.

By the way, I need a new boot, if anyone has one for sale...

trans87, ask me anyother questions you may have..

Hey 88GTA you didn't have any problems with it fitting? I heard they weren't for 1988 GTA? I think I have the GTA console that's why I am concerned. How did you get it to work?

It doesn't fit Formula. At least that what my directions said. It is actually a really good fit. The B&M trim piece fit perfectly between my power mirror switch and ash tray release button. When I cut out hole with the template the gave you I purposely cut it a little smaller and using a die grinder and carbide porting/deburring bit I tailered the fit. I also did not use sheet metal screws to secure shifter brackets to the floor. I used a tool, from the shop where I work. You drill a hole and install a large rivet type pieces that have threads in them. They are permantely secured into the floor and have threads to accept a 6mm bolt. I felt this is much stronger than a sheet metal screw becasue I plan on banging that ratchet shifter HARD.

Only complaint. I wish B&M made plugs that interfaced with the factory harness for the inhibitor/reverse switch and illumination so not wire cutting and soldering was needed.

Just make sure to follow directions and you will have no problems. Need any more info feel free to e-mail me or post here.
